After School Academic Assistance Program Reminder

The District’s After School Academic Assistance Program is still underway and will continue through the end of the school year for students in need of extra help!   This program provides struggling students with an opportunity for extra help in Math (Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2), English (Grades 9 and 10), and Science (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics).  We encourage students to take advantage of this opportunity for extra help!  The schedule has been updated through Friday, May 13th, and can be found on the District’s website

Students in grades 9-12 in the UPSMR program attended a career speaker event in coordination with the Indian Hills Guidance Department with the deans from the School of Health Sciences at Quinnipiac University to explore the various opportunities, majors of study, medical school preparation and career fields in the health sciences.

Students in the Indian Hills UPISB & UPSMR participated in senior capstone activities this week with a guest speaker from the NY Riverkeepers to learn about environmental stewardship in our local New York and New Jersey watershed.  Students then worked in teams at the Meadowlands Environmental Commission to explore the causes of a “Fish Murder Mystery” through the interdisciplinary study of policy, maps, current events, and data collected in the field.

Mrs. Higbie’s Level 2 Photography Classes from Ramapo High School and Indian Hills High School ventured to Ramapo College for a field trip where they were able to use more traditional photography skills and editing strategies to create extraordinary photos. Thanks to our friends at Ramapo College for their hospitality and for providing an eventful trip for our digital artists as they explored the world of ‘Old School’ photography!

Watershed Ambassador Inspires Ramapo Biology Students to Explore Environmental Science. Donna Climent, Watershed Ambassador from Americorp, worked with students in Mr. Vogel’s biology classes to use the biodiversity of macroinvertebrates to determine water quality.  These photos show students doing science by analyzing the macroinvertebrates in a water sample from a local stream.  They determined the health of the stream to be good, supporting a wide variety of small insect larvae.  Some groups even found a vertebrate in their samples.  Student excitement was palpable as they found living things moving around in their samples.  Was this fun?  Was this learning?  Clearly, it was both.

The Ramapo High School Music Awards dinner was recently held at Macaluso's in Hawthorne.  It was a wonderful evening as the students and staff gave longtime Band Director and Music Teacher, Jackie Sarracco a wonderful send-off.  Cheers to you Ms. Sarracco as you move to the next exciting stage in your life.
