Shaping the Future of Risk

Greetings RIMS Washington Chapter Members and Supporters!

We hope your Fall is off to a great start! It’s hard to believe the holiday season is just around the corner. As we settle into our role as Co-Presidents, we’re excited for what our Chapter has planned for the 2024/25 Term.

Our members turned out in force for a joint September kick-off event with WSIA (Washington Self-Insurers Association). This sold-out event, held at Mariners Stadium, welcomed 66 attendees. It began with an educational session led by the Seattle Mariners VP of High Performance and Medical and their Manager of Risk and Liability. The evening wrapped up with networking during the Mariner’s game.  A big thanks to Lockton for sponsoring this event.

Thanks to Aon for sponsoring October’s educational session on Integrated Risk – an innovative approach to structure your insurance program by stretching a shared retention across multiple lines of cover. Based on the questions and feedback from the audience, this is a topic our members are interested in continuing to discuss. We are excited to bring new ideas like this (and CE credits!) to our members.

We’d also like to recognize our Rising Risk Professionals for their dedication and enthusiasm to enhancing their careers as demonstrated by their participation in October’s session on career insights and opportunities, hosted at Aon’s office.

And in November we are branching out into a lesser known, but important topic, Aviation Risk: Navigating New Frontiers of Innovation and Exposure.

We are excited about the next round of networking and educational events our amazing Programs Committee has lined up for our members and chapter supporters. For more details visit our Chapter Website.

  • December 5th, Holiday Bash: Join us at the House of Smith Jet City Winery in Georgetown for a festive evening.
  • March 6th, Education Forum: Save the Date! This year we’re moving our full-day forum to the Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue – more details to come.

To ensure that we can continue to offer relevant educational sessions and great networking events to our members, we’re looking for organizations interested in becoming a 2025 Chapter or Education Forum Sponsor. If you are interested in sponsoring our future chapter activities, please visit the Sponsorship page of our website, or contact us here!

If you’re not on our mailing list, you can sign up on our Chapter Website or connect with us on LinkedIn. We appreciate any questions, feedback, or suggestions that you may have. Please contact us here or any of our board members.

Thank you for being part of our wonderful community and helping us to provide a highly inclusive environment for all identity groups to thrive in the global risk community. And we hope to see you on December 5th for an evening of cheer, connection, and celebration!

Programs in Review

Who's on First?

On September 11, 2024, we gathered at the Seattle Mariners game for a unique networking event featuring insights from Therese Baxter, Manager of Risk & Liability, and Rob Scheidegger, Vice President for High Performance and Medical at the Mariners. The program, titled Who’s on First? Inside the Ballpark with Seattle Mariners Risk & Liability Manager, provided an exclusive look into the complexities of managing risk and liability within a professional sports organization. Attendees gained valuable knowledge about the rigorous protocols and innovative strategies the Mariners’ team employs to safeguard the well-being of fans, players, and staff.

Integrated Risk: Magic or Just Math?

On October 17, 2024, our program Integrated Risk: Magic or Just Math? explored how an integrated risk program enhances efficiency by extending a shared retention across multiple lines of coverage, such as Cyber, Financial, Professional, Property, and Casualty. Key benefits include cost savings from increased retentions, multi-year stability through fixed rates and capacity, and protection against volatility with loss-financing mechanisms. Fronting options also enable the use of a captive, allowing insureds to participate in underwriting profits while safeguarding against exceeding risk tolerance across diverse exposures.

RIMS Western Regional Conference

The RIMS Washington Chapter had an incredible time at this year’s RIMS Western Regional Conference in Bend, Oregon. The conference was filled with invaluable opportunities to learn, network, and share ideas with fellow risk management professionals. From engaging keynote sessions and insightful workshops to the chance to exchange best practices with peers across the region, the event was a true celebration of collaboration and innovation within the risk management community.
