Shaping Our Future Through Connection

Hello RIMS Washington Chapter Members and Supporters!

It’s been a quick transition to fall weather, but I hope you enjoyed our lovely PNW summer. Thank you for entrusting the Board to support the Chapter’s mission, “To advance the risk management profession and member participation through fellowship, education and community service.”

In mid-July, the Chapter Board met to discuss our goals and plan for the 2023-2024 programming year, which runs September-June. We look forward to connecting with our Chapter community as we plan in-person and virtual monthly educational events, social events, and our 2024 Education Forum. Our theme, “Shaping the Future of Risk” will be incorporated into all we do during this next programming year.

It was wonderful to see so many familiar and new faces during our September and October in-person events! Thank you to all that participated! To learn more about our upcoming programs, please visit the Programs section of our newsletter.

The Board has a special request to organizations that are interested in sponsoring and supporting our 2024 Chapter programming and/or Education Forum. If you are interested in sponsoring our chapter activities, please visit the Sponsorship page of our website, or contact me here!

If you’re not on our mailing list, you can sign-up on our Chapter Website or connect with us on LinkedIn.

I want to thank our 2023 Chapter Sponsors: AIGAONAXA XL, Chubb, FM Global, Liberty MutualSedgwick, and Zurich. Your support of our Chapter makes everything we do possible.

I hope to see you at our annual Holiday party!

Membership Spotlight

Cat Wilson, Catherine Wilson Agency – Farmers Insurance

Why did you join RIMS Washington (i.e. community, education, networking, career requirement) and what are you hoping to get out of your membership?

RIMS is a great opportunity to expand my education and network as I transition from owning an insurance agency into risk management. I enjoyed attending the 2023 Education Forum this past Spring. I believe in surrounding myself with successful professionals.

Describe your career path and current role.

Currently I own and operate the Catherine Wilson Agency – Farmers Insurance since 2018. Previously I was an insurance adjuster for 11 years after obtaining a BS in Management Information Systems from CWU. I will complete the Associates in Risk Management (ARM) this year as I transition to a career in risk management.

What is your favorite small/local business?

My most recent favorite local spot is The Muse at the Everett waterfront. They renovated the historic Weyerhaeuser building and it is beautiful inside! A great place to get a coffee or a cocktail and a bite.

Associate Chapter Only Membership

In January 2023, we began offering Associates (Vendors, Service Practitioners) a Washington Chapter only membership, which will allow you to join Chapter events at a discount in addition to other local member benefits. This option does not include any of the member benefits associated with global RIMS membership.

Get Involved and Volunteer with RIMS!

Volunteering is essential to service the goals of our chapter and support our members. Best of all, our volunteers do it because they believe in the cause and want to help. Whether you are looking for something short-term, or a longer-term involvement, we have the right opportunity for you. Your contribution will support fellowship, education, and community service by:

  • Sharing your knowledge and expertise
  • Utilizing your connections to promote RIMS
  • Engaging with other members to create a stronger risk management community
  • Supporting the next generation of risk managers
  • Expanding the profile and reach of RIMS to include all members of our community

Programs In Review

September

The September program was met with rain, wind and cocktail making. We were the first group to experience OOLA's Distillery’s newest venue in Capitol Hill.  Many attendees had a pleasant surprise and learned how to muddle and shake up a Gimlet, all the while learning about supply chain challenges, building a venue during the panic, inflationary price pressures and how OOLA stays relevant when consumer spending is challenged. Their insurance premiums went up 60%+ and the attendees taught in return what and why OOLA experienced the increases despite no losses.

October

Thank you to Sean Catanese, Enterprise Risk Management Program Manager at King County Office of Risk Management Services, for speaking at the RIMS WA Chapter speaker series on October 11, 2023. The tools he shared for assessing risk was a tremendous value to our attendees.

A big thank you to FM Global for being our spotlight sponsor.
