The Bishop was informed that Bettye Jo Harris (1934-2025) died in the early morning hours of Monday, January 6, 2025.
Bettye Jo was a nine-time Deputy from the Diocese of Hawaiʻi to General Convention of the Episcopal Church, serving from 1982 to 2006. In addition to serving on Executive Council and many committees at the Churchwide level (including the Presiding Bishop Search Committee), she served as a member of the Diocesan Council in this Diocese, and as a member of the board of a wide variety of organizations focusing on public health, peace and justice, and civil rights. She has received multiple awards for her service to her community, including the NAACP Distinguished Service Award for Lifetime Achievement. She was also featured in the Diocese's Convention 56 theme video (17:40) for her dedicated service.
Bettye Jo was an Honorary Canon of the Cathedral filling The Reverend Claude Francis DuTeil, Sr., Chair since May 11, 2008.
Bettye and her late husband, Ernest (d. 2018), were active members of St. Christopher’s Church, Kailua.
She is survived by their children – Tanya, Mark and Greg. Please keep them in your prayers.
