This Spring has been packed with major accomplishments. In this newsletter, we summarize just a few of these exciting accomplishments and provide an update on recent activities and events.
We were awarded an NSF Expedition grant, the largest grant awarded by the NSF, to explore the design of real-time, intelligent, secure, and explainable systems. This grant will help support a large number of students and positions the UC Berkeley RISELab at the center of this emerging area of research. It is worthy noting that only three Expedition grants were awarded this year, and ours is the only one awarded to a single institution.
Our faculty were honored by major awards and promotions. Professor David Patterson received the Turing Award (an equivalent of Nobel Prize for Computer Science) for his groundbreaking work on the RISC processor. Raluca Ada Popa received the Sloan Research fellowship to explore cryptographic methods to share data across organizational boundaries. Finally, Randy Katz was named the vice chancellor of research at UC Berkeley.
We also published influential papers in several top systems and AI venues. These papers address topics ranging from cryptographic primitives and efficient coordination protocols to new frameworks for distributed reinforcement learning and convolution free convolutional neural networks.
Thank you for your continued support and look forward to seeing you at the upcoming RISE retreat and training camp.
Professor Joseph Gonzalez
