engaging in individual therapy is a core part of our program, she agreed to give it another try but was hesitant. The first few weeks were rough and we wondered if she would ever feel safe enough to trust her therapist to let some walls down. But in time, we began to see some change. About 4 months into the program, she shared with me that our staff therapist was the first therapist that ever made her feel like she genuinely cared about her as a person and not just a case to be passed around in the system. Since trust and safety are two foundational things that must be established for the real work of healing and helping to begin, this was a huge step in the therapeutic process.
