Visit Salt Lake is a private, nonprofit corporation responsible for the promotion of Salt Lake as a convention and travel destination. In partnership with Salt Lake County, Visit Salt Lake improves the area’s economy by attracting and providing support to conventions, leisure travelers and visitors. The organization has a strong commitment to sustainability and stewardship of the area’s natural environment. It’s also one of three Great American West Gateway Cities.
| Did You Know? Visit Salt Lake Edition |
- Salt Lake City was founded on July 24, 1847, by a group of pioneers of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They were the first non-Native Americans to settle in the area.
- The Great Salt Lake is the largest salt lake in the Western Hemisphere, but its average depth is only about 15 feet. You cannot sink in it, much like the Dead Sea.
- The downtown street grid was uniquely designed by LDS leader Brigham Young. The streets are remarkably wide because he wanted them to accommodate a four-ox team and covered wagon making a full U-turn.
- The world’s very first franchised Kentucky Fried Chicken was opened in Salt Lake City in 1952, not Kentucky, by a friend of Colonel Sanders.
- The city is home to the Family History Library, the largest genealogical facility in the world that contains records of billions of names.
- The Wasatch Mountains boast some of the best snow on earth. The collision of cold desert air and mountain moisture creates a unique powder coveted by skiers worldwide.
- Its unique location makes it one of the few places in the country where you can sunbathe and play golf in the valley, while hitting world-class ski resorts less than an hour's drive away.
- Settlers in Salt Lake City were the first in the American West to utilize a large-scale irrigation system. They dammed City Creek to flood it so it would soften the soil, allowing them to plant potatoes.

Community
-
The 21st Annual Cheyenne Day of Giving was held on May 8. This powerful community event is dedicated to helping those in need, and RMI was proud to support this important cause with a monetary donation, which goes directly to local charities and agencies, including organizations like St. Joseph’s Food Pantry, COMEA, Needs Inc. and the Boys & Girls Club of Cheyenne. The event is held annually each year, but fundraising happens year-round to assist agencies throughout the year. Click here for more information on how you can make an impact.

Nicole is currently a board member for the Cheyenne Greenway Foundation, and RMI gladly donated a UW-themed basket for their Thankful Thursday event that took place in April. The event brought in a whopping $16,000 to help fund enhancements and beautification projects on the Greater Cheyenne Greenway. We highly encourage those in the Cheyenne community to check out the almost 50 miles of Greenway around town, especially now that the weather is warming up!
