Canva Docs + Magic Write

Canva docs are a powerful document creation tool that integrates seamlessly with Canva’s design features. Add Magic Write, Canva’s artificial intelligence (AI) assistant, and you’ve got a game-changing combo for educators. Magic Write helps you brainstorm ideas, draft lesson plans, create rubrics, and even write parent communication all inside a beautifully designed document.

Why it’s great for educators:

  • Design meets AI: Create visually stunning lesson plans, newsletters, and classroom resources in minutes.
  • Time-saver: Generate outlines, activities, and even scripts with Magic Write’s AI-powered suggestions.
  • Collaboration-friendly: Share and edit documents with colleagues easily.
  • Privacy-conscious: Canva complies with major privacy standards and doesn’t require student accounts for teacher use.
  • Free for teachers: Canva offers a free Education account with premium features for verified educators.

Bonus for students who are deaf or hard of hearing:

Canva’s design flexibility allows teachers to create highly visual materials with clear layouts, embedded captions in videos, and ASL-friendly graphics that can be used for writing Expanded Skills lessons, pre-teaching vocabulary, and more. Combine Magic Write’s text generation with Canva’s templates to produce accessible resources that support multiple learning pathways.

Deaf Awareness Week in Columbia County

See below for a blurb from Pamela Taylor, teacher of the deaf/hard of hearing, in Columbia County:

The students (and a couple of interpreters) used an [adapted] abstract self-portrait symbol key to help identify themselves within the DHH community. This art became part of several banners placed throughout Columbia County Schools (CCS). The banners included their artwork, the symbol key, Deaf awareness information, and the manual alphabet.

The project became more widespread by having an informational email sent throughout the district about Deaf Awareness, and having a designated day to wear a blue ribbon and/or blue. Then, with permission, we were able to give a surprise breakfast for one of our maintenance workers who is deaf, Doug Hall. A special banner was made for him and hung up in a DHH-theme decorated room.

Mr. Hall has worked for Columbia Schools for over 30 years. He repeatedly told me how grateful he was and that no one had ever done anything for him like this before!

To close out the project, Microsoft Word and Google Slides were used to create a collage of Mr. Hall, CCS students (those that would let me take their pictures), and interpreters. This collage was emailed to the entire district as part of CCS' Great News Network Slides that is sent out weekly.
