Message from the Director

Dear Friends,

Summer is finally here, and we hope that you all are enjoying it!

Like everyone, we look forward to the summer to relax and take it easy, focus on enjoying the outdoors, understanding that fall and winter are not too far away. Summer reminds us that there is more to life than school and work schedules, and that it is good and right to enjoy warmth, visiting family, the sunrise, and sunsets. And for many of us, we know that summer presents a welcomed opportunity for planning and getting things ready for a successful start to a new school year – for both family and work.

Usually, this would be the mode for ROC the Future as well – but this year is vastly different! We are in a very dynamic season and are “Aligning for Change” and preparing for several major changes, both programmatic and for our infrastructure.

Coming together has never felt more important. At a time when we’re separated by distance, ideas and differences, we hold true to what connects us: the uncompromisable conviction that a child’s potential should not be dictated by race, ethnicity, zip code or circumstance. We stand together, committed to breaking down structural and racial inequities to change systems and improve outcomes for kids. Our work is powered by shared learning, trusted relationships, and unified voices advocating for and with children and their families.

Together, we work toward a limitless future. Their future.

Congratulations Cohort 2 of the Youth Leadership Coalition

We are proud to recognize Kayshawna Evans, Jazaree Willis, Mekhi McKinsey and Gregory Pepin for their completion of the Train the Trainer program with a celebration at Selena’s.

These 4 youth leaders have completed 8 months of training led by SpreadKarma Collective and are now eligible to become trainers in the program. Each youth represents a different youth led organization across Monroe County.

We appreciate our partners, Levine Center to End Hate, PECAN parents, and family members who came out to celebrate.

Highlighting Parent Success

Over the past 9 months, PECAN parent leaders have engaged actively in amplifying the power of parent voice within ROC the Future Alliance (RtFA), in the greater Rochester area, and nationally through StriveTogether.

We extend a special congratulations to PECAN Co-Chair, Maurice Haskins, for joining the ED Trust New York State Parent Advisory Board.

What is Continuous Improvement?

Centered around Plan, Do, Study, Act (PDSA) continuous improvement cycles, we use the simplest of tools and protocols that support communities from identifying results they want to achieve to quantifying improvements and spreading successful practices. At the heart of this practice is an unwavering commitment to using data — quantitative and qualitative — to understand the impact of strategies or practices. This component of the approach also encourages communities to consider opportunities to adopt, adapt or abandon efforts based on their results. -From StriveTogether Collaborative Improvement

Youth Leadership Coalition Video

In November 2020, we piloted a youth development plan grounded in the principles of collective impact and amplifying youth voice in systems change work. Through partnerships with local youth development programs like, Youth Voice One Vision (YVOV), In-Control, and the RCSD Youth Council, we have facilitated two cohorts of youth leaders from across Monroe County. They have been trained in historical youth movements, leadership development and collaborative strategies to addressing social issues.
