Surface Topology. This month we take a close look at the use of surface topology and 3 dimensional pattern in design. Whether it is to perform or enhance a function, or to create a brand identity, using the surface in interesting ways can be an extremely powerful tool.
Performance Cues/ The execution of a functional detail or a decorative pattern can support a product by expressing height of performance and technology.
Enhancing Function/ A functional feature can become the product's most appreciated characteristic. Make the most of functional details by creating an aesthetic focal point.
Layering/ Add depth by layering surfaces. By giving the user a peak of underlying elements it can be a playful invitation or a way of revealing technical elements within.
Brand Identity/ Characteristic patterns and surface topology can define identity and become a way of creating a brand signature across diverse products.
Inviting/ With simple yet clever use of form, objects can describe their function entirely. Undulating surfaces and sculptural forms can pull you in the right direction, without thought.
Touch Me/ Touchpoints can be communicated in many different ways. Communicating with changes in material or texture can be further enhanced with subtle, yet semantic surface changes, inviting touch and interaction.
Shape Changing/ Material development and advancing technologies have opened up a world of new possibilities. 'Alive Geometry' is a hint toward a future with adaptive surfaces. By changing topology based on it's surroundings it creates new and unique user experiences.
Ode features on the BBC World Service/ Our Ode venture partner and olfactory expert, Lizzie Ostrom, appeared on the BBC World Service to talk about Ode and the power of food, fragrance and memory.
