Families getting together at IST
|
|
Neighbor Jennifer shares this info about the Jefferson Park Family get-together on Sunday, May 15:
"We had a fun neighborhood gathering at the International School playground. 11 kids and 8 grown-ups enjoyed playing, crafts, and good conversation. We look forward to gathering again… stay tuned for details!"
Jennifer sends out the dates to the Jefferson Park Google Groups.

Mountain Avenue Speed Tables approved by DTM
...costs money and volunteer time
|
|
|
Mountain Ave. between Grant Rd. and Speedway has a conditional approval for 2 speed tables. Residents will have to gather 60% petition signatures of the abutting area to approve this mitigation. See red lines for proposed sites.
THAT IS A FIRST STEP. The neighborhood has to gather the signatures, the JPNA board has to approve the project, and then fundraising begins--the city does not pay for speed bumps, traffic circles or speed tables.
THIS WILL TAKE VOLUNTEERS, GET INVOLVED TO "GET IT DONE" - Attend a meeting and offer to help with signatures.
The neighbors have long lobbied for help with mitigation on Mountain. We have witnessed so many "near misses". We still need to lower the speed limit from 30 to 25, and design protected bike lanes. Ward III is interfacing with DTM on this issue.
|
|
Speed Bumps within the Neighborhood
...costs money and volunteer time
|
|
Three sites within the Neighborhood have been approved by Department of Transportation for speed bumps/traffic circles. See blue dots for proposed sites.

Monument Sign at First/Grant - soon to be a reality
...business donation acquired!
|
|
Jefferson Park is currently working with Department of Transportation and Mobility (DTM), to complete the requirements for a monument sign at the corner of Grant and Euclid. The sign and contractor have been approved and neighbor, Zach, is coordinating the installation. He may be calling on you to help install.
And great news! A neighbor, business man, has donated the cost of the sign $1500. Oh how we thank you!
|
|
Monument Signs for Grant Rd-Park to Campbell-2 to 4 years
|
|
The plans for the Phase 5/6 of Grant Road are at the 30% stage. Is there space for monument signs for JP? We texted PSOMAS and here is the answer:
" Grant/Mountain – There will be room on the south side of the roadway (both SW and SE corners) for neighborhoods to install signs similar to what you sent. The north side will be a lot tighter (and it’s unlikely we could fit monuments), as we are hoping to preserve the homes on the north side of the road at Mountain."
"Grant/Campbell – There will be room for monuments at the SW and NW corners of the intersection. We don’t have sufficient space at the NE and SE corners at this point, but will let you know if anything changes"
Shall we fund raise? Never too soon to start.

Paving-Mountain to Park to begin July
|
|
Neighbors, update regarding the Jefferson Park paving project: A contractor has been selected, and is under contract. However, asphalt will not be available until the end of June. Construction is expected to begin early to mid-July. The Public Information Office will send out notices 10 days prior to the activity. Until a firm date is finalized, this is the latest information that Department of Transportation and Mobility (DTM) has for us.

TEP Exceptions - Commission asks that Coalition criteria be considered!
|
|
At last Wednesday's public meeting, the City of Tucson's Planning Commission voted unanimously to have staff go back and either change the language in the 6 highlighted criteria or eliminate them. In addition, they asked staff to consider 4 more criteria that have been proposed by the Steering Committee of the Tucson Undergrounding Coalition. The Coalition is a group of 11 neighborhoods and three other organizations who have formed to address concerns with the Kino to DeMoss-Petrie Project.
The four criteria the Steering Committee proposed are:
12-l. The effects that can be expected from permitting any of the exceptions listed herein or any combination of those exceptions when added together must remain consistent with the overall purpose and integrity of the gateway/scenic route, unless doing so is technologically impossible and/or clearly financially cost prohibitive.
12-m. Notwithstanding any of the above criteria, above ground transmission lines are not allowed in or alongside historic areas (as defined by or listed in the National Register of Historic Places, properties or districts, City of Tucson Historic Preservation Zones, City of Tucson Historic Landmarks, or Neighborhood Preservation Zones). This one, we hope, will prevent the TEP proposed bisecting of Jefferson Park with 138kV poles and overhead lines!
12-n. A utility cannot obtain relief from Gateway/Scenic ordinances by routing through adjacent residential neighborhoods.
12-o. Any new above-ground utility structure that is permitted must be designed, constructed, and maintained to be as unobtrusive as possible.
Thank you Underground Coalition - keep up the fight for us!

Blue Barrel Contamination costs money!
|
|
The City is paying (you are paying) roughly $30,000 per month to Republic Services because of the level of contamination people are tossing into the blue recycle barrels. The contamination rate arriving in blue barrels at the material recycle facility is 29%. That means about a third of everything that goes into the barrels is not allowed. We’re charged for everything above a 15% rate. Please:
- No plastic grocery bags or film (they tangle in the equipment).
-
No glass (instead take glass bottles and jars to glass drop-off site).
- No garbage or food waste. Food containers can be lightly rinsed to recycle, but just throw it out if it's very dirty!
- Leave labels on containers.
- Bottle and jar caps and lids should be left on the container.
- All recyclables go loose into the blue barrel, together - - no sorting! Please put them in individually, not inside a box or bag.
- Do not flatten cans and bottles to ensure sorting equipment works properly
- Cut or flatten corrugated cardboard boxes to fit in container. Remove plastic wrapping and liners

IT IS LESS THAN A YEAR BRFORE YOU NEED a "federally-compliant credential" to travel.
Federal Travel ID deadline is less than a year away.
Beginning May 3, 2023, you will need a federally-compliant credential -- like the Arizona Travel ID -- to get past TSA checkpoints at airports for domestic flights. Without the Arizona Travel ID or other form of federally-compliant identification such as a valid U.S. Passport, fliers risk missing an airline flight because the non-travel driver license will not be accepted at TSA checkpoints.
This credential is distinguished by a gold star in the upper right corner and is available to Arizona residents as a driver license or identification card.
You can walk-in to an office for this service, but we suggest scheduling an appointment and that can be done online at azmvdnow.gov. Even if you haven’t activated your AZ MVD NOW account, you can still schedule a Travel ID appointment.
Because the Arizona Travel ID is compliant with the federal standards, you will need to provide extra documentation. This includes:
- Proof of identity: a birth certificate or US passport
- Social Security Number: just the number, not the card
- Two documents proving Arizona residency: rental or bank statements, credit card or cell phone bills in your name with your current Arizona address, etc.
More information, and a full list of qualifying documents are available at azdot.gov/TravelID
Number of AZ MVD Now accounts now exceeds 3 million
More than 3 million Arizonans have discovered that AZ MVD Now is the safest, fastest and most convenient way to complete services with the Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division.
Since launching in April 2020, more than 3 million Arizonans have activated their free AZMVDNow.gov account, giving them access to the primary online portal for MVD customers.
Here are some of the things you can do with your AZ MVD Now account:
- Go online and schedule your own in-office MVD appointments.
- View information related to your vehicle, including title and registration status.
- Complete more than 30 services, like registration renewals, ordering a duplicate license, change of address, registration refunds, title transfers, sold notices and more.
Every Arizonan with a credential – a driver license or identification card – or a vehicle registered in Arizona has an AZ MVD Now account. To activate your account, go to AZMVDNow.gov and follow the prompts.
Arizona ID in Apple Wallet
We’re excited to be the first state to allow drivers to add their license or state ID card to Apple Wallet. The choice may ease the sometimes arduous nature of getting onto a flight. This puts our residents at the leading edge of convenient, private and secure technology.
Using this feature in Apple Wallet is voluntary. If anyone prefers to use a physical credential at airport security, they may.
Once added to Apple Wallet, Arizona residents can present their driver license or state ID to the Transportation Security Administration at participating airport security checkpoints by simply tapping their device at the identity reader. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is the first airport in America where passengers can use this technology. We're proud that this started here and will spread.
Credentials in Apple Wallet are private and secure. Users are able to choose what information they share. Biometric authentication ensures that only the person who added the ID to the device can view or present their information. If a resident loses their device, they can use the “Find My” app to easily lock, locate, or remotely erase it. Apple Wallet data is encrypted and protected against tampering and theft. Security features allow the MVD to securely verify identity.
More information about these topics can be found here.
To plan your trip, get travel times or see ADOT cameras, download the AZ 511 app.

“Heat waves kill more people than any other type of severe weather in the U.S.” reports Tanya Lewis in the Scientific American (7/22/21). “And climate change is making them more frequent and unpredictable.”
Here are three simple steps we each can take to reduce the risks to ourselves and our neighbors:
-
Be neighborly: Get to know your nearby neighbors. It begins with saying, “Hello” and introducing yourself. It can extend much further, from friendly conversations on the sidewalk to backyard teas to block parties.
-
Prepare your household: Check out our Household Checklist for Extreme Heat.
-
Volunteer to be a contact person for neighbors on the block where you live.
