ROUTE 17 IN STAFFORD:

OVERNIGHT TRAFFIC STOPS AND LANE CLOSURES STARTING MONDAY, JUNE 5

Crews will stop traffic intermittently to place beams for a new overpass spanning Route 17 that will carry future Interstate 95 northbound local lanes

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Route 17 and Route 17 Business (Warrenton Road) travelers in Stafford County will encounter overnight delays for several weeks in June near the Interstate 95 interchange at exit 133 (Falmouth/Warrenton).

Crews will be placing beams over the travel lanes for a new I-95 overpass. The overpass will carry the future local lanes of I-95 northbound as part of the Northbound Rappahannock River Crossing.

Traffic on Route 17 and Route 17 Business will be stopped intermittently for up to 30-minute intervals while beams are being moved into position and secured. Lane closures and traffic stops have been scheduled at the following dates and times, beginning on the evening of Monday, June 5:

Monday, June 5Friday, June 9 (ending early Saturday, June 10)

Route 17/Route 17 Business Northbound

  • 8 p.m. – 7 a.m. Alternating lane closures
  • 11 p.m. – 3 a.m. Intermittent full traffic stops for up to 30 minutes. If work is required from Friday evening into Saturday morning, the full stop will occur from midnight to 3 a.m. Saturday.

Route 17/Route 17 Business Southbound

  • 7 p.m. – 6 a.m. Alternating lane closures
  • 11 p.m. – 3 a.m. Intermittent full traffic stops for up to 30 minutes. If work is required from Friday evening into Saturday morning, the full stop will occur from midnight to 3 a.m. Saturday.

To relieve congestion in the Fredericksburg area, crews are building separate projects to open a 10-mile extension of 95 Express Lanes and add three new northbound travel lanes across the Rappahannock River.

When the Northbound Rappahannock River Crossing project is complete by May 2024, six northbound lanes will span the Rappahannock River between exit 130 (Route 3) in Fredericksburg and exit 133 in Stafford.

As part of the project, a fourth I-95 northbound auxiliary lane is also under construction from exit 133 to exit 136 (Centreport Parkway) in Stafford.
