SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY — As of Aug. 5, Route 646 (Governor Darden Road) is open to traffic following the completion of a safety improvements project on a section of Route 646 between Jenkins Drive and Ward Lane in Southampton County.
Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) contractor crews widened the shoulders on a section of Route 646 located approximately 3.5 miles east of the Courtland town line. In addition to shoulder widening and providing additional sight distance, , side slopes were regraded and drainage upgrades were installed.
Gray and Sons Construction Inc., headquartered in Southampton County, began construction on the $667,657 project in spring 2022.
