By Royal Regent Rick Saturn   Annual Election Coming Up June 15

The annual election meeting of the Royal Rosarians will take place Thursday, June 15 at the DoubleTree Hotel, Portland at 6:30 p.m.

This year there are twelve candidates for nine open positions on Council. There are two candidates for Secretary of State and three candidates for the Foundation Board.

All Rosarians must register at the voting table to receive their ballot. Once completed the ballots are to be placed in the ballot box. Vote for a maximum of nine candidates for Council and one candidate for Secretary of State. A ballot with more than nine selections for Council or more than one selection for Secretary of State will not be counted. Please remember that your Secretary of State choice must be elected to Council, as well, so make sure that your Secretary of State choice is also one of your nine Council choices. Each ballot must also indicate a maximum selection of two candidates for the Foundation Board. Voting will end at 6:30 p.m. and ballots will be counted immediately thereafter.

For new Rosarians, the person elected Secretary of State in June is then in line to become our 2020 Prime Minister. Please remember that you may only vote for one person for Secretary of State and no more than two candidates for the Foundation Board. In the event of a tie in the voting we will have a run-off election.

Keep in mind that there is no proxy voting and no absentee voting. You must be present to vote.

Immediately below is information submitted by each candidate. The questions were put to Council and Secretary of State candidates by Royal Regent Rick Saturn, who chairs the Nominating Committee. The submissions of each candidate have not been edited. They are printed as submitted. The photos of Rosarian candidates were submitted by the candidates.

The first two candidates are running for Secretary of State (Kimberly Bown and Korrie Hoeckendorf, in alphabetical order) as well as for re- election to Council. Following these two candidates are the other candidates for Council.

There are three candidates for two positions on the Royal Rosarian Foundation board. Those candidates are Kathie Bagley, Larry Bentley, and Rodney Mazour. Statements by Foundation candidates were not submitted.

Best Wishes to the candidates!

Candidates for Secretary of State and Rosarian Council
  Dame Kimberly Bown

Why do you wish to serve on the 2017/18 Council?

Serving on Council allows me to contribute my career expertise to our organizational needs. My skills and abilities were put to the test in leading all the moving parts for a successful Hospitality Weekend. Our Royal Rosarian website's offerings have improved under my care. As Council for Membership, our ranks were enhanced by a strong and participating new member class of 2016. And as Chancellor of the Exchequer, by managing our finances, I have enjoyed a broader understanding of all aspects of the organization.

The Royal Rosarians' mission as Ambassadors of Goodwill for Portland is rooted in impressive tradition! I have enjoyed these traditions by participating in every NW Festival and local parades, and look forward to visiting the newest addition, Penticton, BC. Our membership's increased participation will benefit them and the organization. I will put my energies toward that goal.
  Dame Korrie Hoeckendorf

Why do you wish to serve on the 2017/18 Council?

Knighted in 2006, over the last 11 years, I have served on Council as the Royal Gardner, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lord High Steward, and this year as Lord High Sheriff. I also served 3 years on the Foundation Board, chairing the Field Trip Program, and as the President of the Foundation my last year on the board. Over the years, I have chaired many events, including Christmas Brunch, the Rosarian Picnic, Grand Floral Ball, and the Hospitality Weekend in 2010, 2012 and 2016.

My proudest accomplishment to date was ushering in the class of 2017. Alan and I love this organization, and the family we have gained by being so involved. We are committed to continuing the pageantry and traditions so loved, and that make the Rosarians unique. These reasons are why I am again running for Council, in addition to seeking the office of Secretary of State.
  Dame Si Barron

Why do you wish to serve on the 2017/18 Council?

I joined the Rosarians in 2010 under the leadership of Ray Hanson and since being an active participant, I have gotten to know many people while working on committees and chairing a few. Those include fun night, the farewell breakfast, registration and local parades.   It's time to step up to the plate and have more of a leadership role.  Besides teaching, I direct a children's choir and teach a senior tap class.   Because of my involvement in these activities I believe I will be an asset to to council.  I have learned a lot from this wonderful organization and now it's time take a step forward.

I would like to thank Rick Saturn for giving me an opportunity to add my skills as a part of council.

  Sir Knight Jon Caplan

Why do you wish to serve on the 2017/18 Council?

Knighted in 2011, I have served as Chair for Newsmakers (2016 and 2017), Chair for the Queen's Garden Party (2015) and participated on the Newsmakers Committee (2014-2017). In addition, I provided assistance with the creation of Royal Rosarian marketing materials (2012). With a healthy respect for the history and tradition of the Rosarians, I seek a position on the Rosarian Council and offer my unique and effective communication style, willingness to try new ideas for the betterment of the organization, and passion to serve with an eye toward immediate and long-term benefits and growth for the Royal Rosarians.

  Sir Knight John Danielson

Why do you wish to serve on the 2017/18 Council?

Starting in 2014 I served on the Rosarian Council for three years.  Last year I made the decision not to run for Council because my father was very ill, as was my much-loved dog Sophie.  Sadly, both have passed but that has brought about another opportunity to run for Council in 2017.

Why the Council now? My Council assignments allowed me to work with many Rosarians. The work was always about goals, options and accomplishing the goal. I have missed those exciting conversations with Rosarians. I would like to return to the council to continue to encourage meaningful thought and discussion.

Most importantly as a Rosarian for 12 years I have been proud to wear the white suit and represent our city in such a visible way. Beyond the suit the Rosarians continue to provide me with an avenue to contribute to our community and to continued personal growth.

  Dame Jannette Day

Why do you wish to serve on the 2017/18 Council?

I aspire to be on the 2017/2018 council to further my support of the Royal Rosarian business and activities. As a dedicated business manager I am a results-oriented leader providing dynamic, focused and decisive leadership while creating and guiding a strong team. I approach projects with enthusiasm and vision.

Over the past five years I have supported the Royal Rosarians by participating on the following committees;

Chair - Registration table at Membership Meetings 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015
Chair - Blessing of the Festival 2015 with Tom Hofmann
Chair - Blessing of the Festival 2016 with Roz Vancil
Chair - Merchandise Table 2016 with Roz Vancil

This is my first year on council and I have been assigned several projects, Tuesday Report, Poinsettia sales, Merchandise, Rose Festival Pin Sales, in addition I have helped other council members on their assignments. When you need something done Call Me!

  Dame Suzanne Day

Why do you wish to serve on the 2017/18 Council?

I joined the Portland Royal Rosarians in their Centennial Year. My mentor recommended not getting too involved too soon. In order to avoid volunteer burnout that can happen so easily. Well, I didn't follow the recommendation. My first activity was to accept the duty of Membership Table Sign-In. Hectic was the best descriptor until I got the process down and learned member names. I did that for two years or was it three? Then I was asked to help with Merchandise sales at meetings and Hospitality Weekend. That continues as we move into 2017 Rose Festival season. I am happy dressing up in my parade uniform and greeting the Navy ships or putting on an apron and washing dishes for Hospitality Weekend.

Serving others is my motto. I am one of those people who just enjoy others and find joy in meeting new people and making new friends. My childhood was one where we never knew a stranger. I have passed that on to my daughters and grandchildren. Outreach is an area that I excites me and so does standing before a crowd with a microphone. Helping new members feel included is a soft skill that I possess as well as encouraging people to be active in our organization. We are blessed to have such a rich history.

What I can bring to Council is my goodwill, my commitment to the Royal Rosarians to plan for the next 100 years. I will gladly assume any post assigned to me. I am so humbled and proud to be a Portland Royal Rosarian. As a child, I never would have thought that even with my privileged upbringing that I could one day wear the white wool suit and straw hat. Thank you for accepting me.

Why do you wish to serve on the 2017/18 Council?

The day I was knighted into the Royal Rosarians was one of the proudest of my life. For a blue-collar mill town kid, to be accepted into this group of civic-minded leaders has been a huge honor. The last ten years of membership have only reinforced my feelings of acceptance and meaningful involvement. These last few months as a Red Cape has been so fun and fulfilling. I look forward to the opportunity to continue to serve the Organization as a member of the elected Council.

  Dame Pat Maberry null

Why do you wish to serve on the 2017/18 ouncil?

Serving on the Royal Rosarians Council is an honor and privilege. The last two years of first being a Red Cape under Prime Minister Rick Saturn and as a Council Member under James Stahl has provided me with the experience and understanding of how import completing assignments to the best of my ability is a priority. I having Chaired the Christmas Brunch, the Membership Meetings, the Family Picnic and the Milk Carton Boat races this year. And in the past years been responsible for the Hospitality Food Suite, Rosarians Greetings, International Track and Field Airport Greetings and Co-Chaired the New Member Committee and the Silent Auction. When selecting committee members, I have tried to be as inclusive as possible recruiting new members, experienced members and members that may need a bit of coaching to participate again. I take great pride in being a Royal Rosarian and contributing to the success and enjoyment of a wonderful organization.

  Sir Knight Dwight Terry

Why do you wish to serve on the 2017/18 Council?

I consider is a privilege and honor to serve on the Royal Rosarian Council. For those of you who are new to the organization, I served served on the council from 2003 to 2007 before opening my own business.

In 2015 I was appointed to the council serving as the Royal Gardner and am currently serving as Minister of Foreign Affairs. It has been a wonderful experience serving the membership, representing the city and our local communities.

I look forward to continuing my service on the council, uphold the traditions continuing the positive image that we Rosarians have in the local community as well as around the world.

I thank you in advance for your considering me to serve you on council.

  Sir Knight Mike Ware

Why do you wish to serve on the 2017/18 Council?

Since joining the Rosarians in 2011, both my wife, Lady Colleen and I have been very active in the Rosarians. Specifically, in the area of fundraising and participation on several committees. I feel strongly that I have exhibited the ability to provide leadership within the areas of responsibility given to me on both individual committees as well as serving on the Foundation Board and currently as the Foundation Board President.

As chairperson for the Hearts and Roses Auction, we have grown significantly in size as well as participation in the event by Rosarians and individuals from the greater business community.

My goal on the Council if elected will be to continue my current fundraising activities and provide avenues for additional fundraising while working to expand the Royal Rosarian organization to the greater Metro area.
