Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley: The Magic of Arterberry Maresh

13 Tasting Notes

By Erin Brooks
“Although just 6,000 cases of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are made annually, this family-run estate epitomizes the best of what Willamette Valley has to offer and is synonymous with Oregon’s old-vine heritage. The wines are concentrated yet elegant, fruity yet flinty and are some of the most impressive wines I’ve tried anywhere—not just in the US.” —Erin Brooks, Wine Advocate

This is the best-kept-secret in elite Oregon Pinot, quietly made for three generations by the Maresh family. This family is solely responsible for shaping the region's wine history with their pioneering vineyard, among the oldest on the entire West Coast.

Today, we pay honor to James "Jim" Maresh, Sr., who left us in his Dundee home back in March of 2021. He was one month shy of his 95th birthday.

His legacy is carried on, extraordinarily well, through the family's third-generation winemaker Jim Maresh Jr. with the profound wine offered today.

13% alcohol + organic farming + minuscule production + oldest, most sought-after, and acclaimed fruit + a beyond-reasonable prices of $34.97 to $59.97 = too good to be true. Believe it.

Also, it's no surprise that 2021 is one of the best vintages Oregon has had in the past decade and, potentially, their entire history! You need to know about this vintage! From Wine Business:

Outstanding 2021 Oregon Harvest Foreshadows Quality Vintage
"2020 was a heartbreaking year for the Oregon wine industry. In the Willamette Valley and Columbia River Gorge, early September wildfires created dense clouds of smoke and ruined many wine grapes. A devastating fire ravaged several communities around Medford, even destroying one winery.

With memories of last year still fresh in people’s minds, the 2021 growing season was a tense one. “We were all just holding our breath all summer,” said Luisa Ponzi, director of winemaking and viticulture at Ponzi Vineyards.

But in the end, the year was everything growers and winemakers could have hoped for. “It’s the best harvest that I have in recent memory,” said Steven Thompson with Analemma Wines in the Columbia River Gorge. “It was extra special this year to be able to move through harvest in a normal fashion and be able to taste the beautiful flavors and not be inhibited on making great wines. I truly believe these are some of the best (wines) we’ve ever had the privilege to produce.”

He’s not alone in that statement. Everywhere you turn, professionals are predicting 2021 will be an outstanding vintage."

Hurry and grab your share of these exquisite, yet affordable, cult wines while they last! We have a limited remaining stock of each, ranging from 8 to 36 bottles. Remember, these sold out quickly when we offered them last time, so make your move swiftly to secure as many as you can fit.

Cheers,
—James tran
2021 Arterberry Maresh 'Old Vines'
Dundee Hills Pinot Noir
Willamette Valley, Oregon

98 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
“The 2021 Pinot Noir Old Vines comes from the Maresh Vineyard, from vines that were planted in 1970, and has a singular expression with detailed, spicy accents reminiscent of bitters or amaro. "You only get those high-toned essences if you pick al dente," winemaker Jim Maresh explains. "It's easy to volatilize all that away." The Old Vines has a medium ruby color and arresting aromas of orange bitters, mossy bark and tobacco leaves complementing a deep core of pomegranate, rhubarb and cranberry. The light-bodied palate offers remarkably pure, detailed flavors. It has velvety tannins, seamless freshness and a very long finish with a flourish of spicy accents. Drink 2025-2040." - Erin Brooks (5/18/23)

#22 Top 100 of 2021 - Wine Spectator (for 2018 vintage):
“Structured yet elegantly layered, this version offers pretty violet, raspberry and spiced tea accents that build tension toward polished, medium-grained tannins. Drink now through 2029.” -TF (8/21)

2021 Tan Fruit (Arterberry Maresh)
'Cuvee Tan Fruit' Chardonnay
Willamette Valley, Oregon

97 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The 2021 Chardonnay Cuvée Tan Fruit comes from Dijon vines in the Maresh Vineyard, planted on a south-facing slope in 1991, plus a number of other sources around Willamette Valley. Bottled a few months earlier than the other Tan Fruit Chardonnays, its savory aromas explode from the glass: a core of peachy fruit is streaked with touches of candle smoke, matchstick, pie crust and floral tones. Medium-bodied, seamless and satiny, it flows effortlessly through the mouth with both depth of flavor and freshness. It has a pleasing touch of grip to anchor the long finish and feels like it has more to give as it unwinds in bottle over the next several years. Around 1,000 cases were made. Drink 2025-2040." -Erin Brooks (5/23)

2021 Tan Fruit (Arterberry Maresh)
Oak Grove Vineyard Chardonnay
Eola-Amity Hills, Oregon

97 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The 2021 Chardonnay Oak Grove Vineyard, from vines situated on sedimentary soil, is energetic and mineral-driven this vintage. Barrel fermented and finished in stainless steel, it opens with streaks of matchstick that give way to a core of red apples, yogurt, pie spice and lemon peel. The light-bodied palate has a silky texture and is buzzing with bright acidity and flinty nuance. It has a concentrated core of ripe citrus and a very long, mineral-driven finish. The Oak Grove's salty, tangy character, reminiscent of Chablis, makes it impossible to put down! Drink 2025-2040." -Erin Brooks (12/21)
