How to update your RSA affiliation

You can edit your affiliation by logging in to your rsa.org account and then updating the Organization field in your member bio. The affiliation will push to the online program after a few days. The RSA no longer prints affiliations on badges, so no worries about missing a printing deadline.

Zoom info session recording available

RSA San Juan 2023 Zoom info session recording.

A recording of our information session, "Looking forward to RSA San Juan 2023" is now available. Registrants for RSA San Juan 2023 were invited to attend a Zoom session that highlighted some ways to make the most out of the upcoming conference in Puerto Rico. How can prep work, pacing yourself during the conference, and follow-up afterward help you to develop, consider, and meet your professional objectives, such as acquiring new knowledge or skills, finding external mentorship and peer communities, meeting topic experts, disseminating your findings, and developing cross-institutional collaborations and Renaissance studies?

Atlantic Standard Time and Daylight Savings Time look forward to ruining your Zoom

Puerto Rico currently observes Atlantic Standard Time (AST) all year. Daylight Saving Time is no longer in use and clocks do not change in Puerto Rico. During the conference, San Juan will be one hour ahead of U.S. Eastern Standard Time.

When scheduling virtual meetings during San Juan 2023, we recommend using a time zone converter; here's the converter we use.

Countries including Canada, Mexico, and the United States will start observing Daylight Saving Time ("spring forward") on Sunday, March 12 this year. For many San Juan 2023 attendees, that is a travel day.

Proof of COVID-19 vaccination to enter the U.S.

If you are a non-U.S. citizen, you will need to show proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 before you travel by air to the United States from a foreign country.

Source: U.S. CDC website

If you are a noncitizen nonimmigrant and are fully vaccinated, make sure your vaccine and proof of vaccination are acceptable to board a flight to the United States.

As required by United States federal law, all airlines or other aircraft operators will provide and collect the passenger attestation on behalf of the U.S. Government prior to boarding. Please check with the airline or aircraft operator for your flight to learn how the airline or aircraft operator will collect your attestation. A sample attestation can be found here.

U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, lawful permanent residents, and those traveling to the United States on an immigrant visa do not need to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination to enter Puerto Rico.

ESTA reminder

International travelers may need an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) to enter the U.S.

San Juan, Puerto Rico is located in the United States, so many conference participants who don't need a visa to visit the U.S. will still need to apply for an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). Be sure to use the official U.S. government site to apply for your ESTA; the cost should be $21 and the website bears the label "Official Website of the Department of Homeland Security."

U.S. citizens do not need an ESTA or passport to travel to Puerto Rico.

Call for volunteer chairs

A special opportunity for RSA members who have earned the PhD or terminal degree in their field.

We are seeking volunteer chairs for panels. A list of open panels with links to the online program can be found at this page.

Audiovisual preparation for presenters

Best plan: A laptop with HDMI output + your presentation on a USB drive.

usb laptop info.jpg

All session rooms at RSA 2023 San Juan will have a digital projector. Panelists must supply their own laptop computers in order to display slides during their session.

To prepare for a smooth start to your presentation, we recommend bringing a laptop with an HDMI output and saving your presentation on a USB drive. Mac laptop users should bring an adapter that allows them to connect to HDMI. Every year the RSA staff buy more adapters than the year before. Every year we run out. Please come prepared!

There will be tech support on-site at the San Juan conference to assist with any A/V issues that unexpectedly arise.

Fun stuff

San Juan offers many opportunities for a break from scholarly pursuits. Here are a few tours and activities that look especially enticing to us:

  • The Caribe Hilton hosts Aqua Adventure, a scuba and snorkel company that will help you discover what's under the water right in San Juan.
  • Companies like Viator can help you book sunset catamaran sails of San Juan Bay.
  • Spoon offers highly rated walking food tours and Puerto Rican cooking classes.

Tours and Pre- and Post-Conference Events

We have arranged several exciting, RSA-exclusive pre- and post-conference tour offerings at points of interest while you enjoy your stay in San Juan. Please visit the conference Special Events page to find a complete listing.

How to get to the hotel from the airport

One of many questions answered in our Guide to Local Services and Attractions is "how do I get to my hotel from the airport?"

Answer: There are no hotel shuttles. Modes of transportation are taxi, Uber (download the app ahead of time), bus, and car rental. For more information about getting around in Puerto Rico, please see this website.

The book exhibit returns!

The book exhibit is back at San Juan 2023. The exhibit will take place at the following times in the San Cristobal Foyer A at the Caribe Hilton:

Thursday, 9 March 9:00 a.m.–6:30 p.m.

Friday, 10 March 9:00 a.m.–6:30 p.m.

Saturday, 11 March 9:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m.

Reminder: Send your paper to your session chair

As the conference approaches, remember to send your paper to your chair and respondent, if applicable, early. How early? That's up to them. We recommend two weeks in advance as a general guideline. For more on academic etiquette as well as the practices of the RSA conference, check out our guidelines for Annual Meeting participants.

Rip current alert
