Barnstable County Regional Substance Addiction Council (RSAC) monthly E-newsletter is a tether of communication across towns, providers, organizations, and individuals on Cape Cod providing information on substance use across the continuum of prevention, harm reduction, treatment, and recovery.
SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL RECOVERY MONTH
National Recovery Month (Recovery Month), which started in 1989, is a national observance held every September to promote and support new evidence-based treatment and recovery practices, the nation’s strong and proud recovery community, and the dedication of service providers and communities who make recovery in all its forms possible.
The Substance Use and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) aims to increase public awareness surrounding mental health and addiction recovery. In the years since Recovery Month launched, SAMHSA has timed announcements of initiatives and grant funding during Recovery Month, while collaborating with private and public entities to celebrate individuals during their long-term recoveries.

PREVENTION STARTS WITH ALL: THE CHRIS HERREN STORY
|
Chris Herren, a basketball legend from Fall River, Massachusetts, was an All-American, broke scoring records and was recruited by the nation’s top colleges. Herren realized his lifelong dream of playing in the NBA when he was drafted by the Denver Nuggets in 1999 and then traded to his hometown team, the Boston Celtics, before losing his career and almost his family to the disease of addiction.
In long term recovery since 2008, Chris inspires people to start the conversation on wellness and educate themselves on the disease of addiction. It is his hope that strength will be found in the struggle and communities will come TOGETHER to address the issue of substance use disorder,
advocate for effective treatment and embrace the power of recovery.

NOTHING ABOUT US WITHOUT US: FAMILIES SUPPORTING RECOVERY
|
Join SAMHSA and the National Federation of Families on Monday, Sept.16th at 1:00 PM to meet four family members who will share their own family recovery story and how they learned to improve their health and wellness, live a self-directed life, and strive to reach their full potential as a family.
Family Recovery includes resilient family members who are parents, spouses, siblings, grandparents, caregivers, and/or children of individuals with emotional, developmental, behavioral, mental health, and/or substance use challenges. Families experience their own recovery when they are actively part of their loved one’s recovery. In recovery, the focus is often on the individual experiencing mental health and/or substance use challenges. Family members who support that person are often forgotten or left out, and feel invisible, blamed, and out of the loop. It is often difficult for families to find support they need as well.

LIFT THE MASK: PORTRAITS OF LIFE WITH MENTAL ILLNESS
THE WEAPONIZATION OF TECHNOLOGY IN DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
|
PART I: Presented by Steven Bradley, Safety and Technology Expert, OurFamilyWizard.com
OVERVIEW: As advocates, prosecutors, law enforcement investigators and service providers, we know that batters use whatever means available to abuse, harass, stalk, and monitor victims. Today technology has provided batterers with tools to accomplish these tasks without even having to leave their computer chairs. In this interactive workshop, Steven Bradley will explore the risks and benefits of technology for victims. Attendees will learn safety planning and evidence collection strategies for phone technology, location apps and social networking sites. Non-technical language will be used to describe the privacy levels of each area and how to safely navigate the world of technology.
PART II: Presented by ADA Alexandra Halprin Isaacs, Cape & Islands District Attorney’s Office
OVERVIEW: A discussion of the ways in which technology is used to further victimize domestic violence survivors in the courtroom setting. Highlighting methods employed by abusers to continue to intimidate, harass, and abuse survivors from the time they report the abuse until trial. Topics will include requests by abusers for access to the entirety of the victim’s personal content within their phones as well as social media credentials, phone records and cell site location information. Additionally, tactics employed by abusers to discredit victim’s testimony or keep them off the stand entirely by exploiting their phone content, use of cash apps, or through misinterpretation of the wiretap statute, and updated technology and recent legislation created to protect victims against further exploitation.

FIRST Steps Together with the Cape Cod Children’s Place is honored to present to you a traveling art installation that is a visual representation of the many pathways to recovery and the tremendous efforts made to start and restart a journey. The disease of addiction does not have to cast one into the shadows to suffer and recover alone. Our wish is for the ribbons to illuminate all the possibilities for pathways to recovery identified by parents and served by our program and light the way for others who may still feel like they’re wandering in the dark.

RIGOROUS EVALUATION OF PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OVERDOSE PREVENTION ACTIVITIES AMONG POPULATIONS AFFECTED BY OVERDOSE
|
On August 30, 2024, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a new cooperative agreement funding opportunity:
RFA-CE-25-149: Rigorous Evaluation of Primary and Secondary Overdose Prevention Activities Among Populations Disproportionately Affected by Overdose
The purpose of the CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) new funding opportunity is to fund research focused on people experiencing disproportionate burden of drug overdose, those who are at greater risk of exposure to drug use, or those experiencing adverse drug use outcomes related to social determinants of health. Funding can be used to develop, implement, and rigorously evaluate strategies to prevent drug-related adverse outcomes among those not yet engaged in drug use (primary prevention), or reduce adverse outcomes among those already engaged in drug use by linking them to and retaining them in care (secondary prevention).
