INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST DRUG ABUSE AND ILLICIT TRAFFICKING
2024 Theme: "The evidence is clear: invest in prevention"
The International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, or World Drug Day, is marked on June 26 every year to strengthen action and cooperation in achieving a world free of drug abuse. The aim of this year’s campaign is to raise awareness about the importance of treating people who use drugs with respect and empathy; providing evidence-based, voluntary services for all; offering alternatives to punishment; prioritizing prevention; and leading with compassion. The campaign also aims to combat stigma and discrimination against people who use drugs by promoting language and attitudes that are respectful and non-judgmental.

SUPPORT AFTER A DEATH BY OVERDOSE (SADOD) HARM REDUCTION YOURSELF WORKSHOP
Harm reduction is a term that has been thrown around a great deal lately in many different ways for many different purposes. This begs the question: What is harm reduction and how can it be applied in people's personal lives as well as broadly? This workshop, led by Gabriel Quaglia, SADOD's Direct Service Provider Program Manager, will cover the history of harm reduction, and what it could mean in different contexts as well as how we might practice it.
After this training you will be able to:
- Understand the roots of harm reduction and what it means
- Discuss how we can practice harm reduction with ourselves and others
- Understand how practices may or may not be harm reduction-focused or informed.
This workshop will take place virtually via Zoom on June 25th, 2024 from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM ET. . Learn more and register here. Please note this workshop has a $10 fee for individuals outside of Massachusetts. Massachusetts residents may attend this workshop for free due to funding from MA-BSAS by using promo code MASS at the time of registration.

WHY LGBTQ+ YOUTH ARE AT INCREASED RISK FOR SUBSTANCE ABUSE & HOW YOU CAN HELP
Youth who identify as LGBTQ+, an umbrella acronym that encompasses different sexual orientations and gender identities, face a heightened risk for substance use because of the stigma and discrimination they often experience.
You can help protect your LGBTQ+ child from substance use by being supportive of their identity, offering unconditional love and support, and responding quickly and effectively if your child shows signs of risk.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR LGBTQ+ CHILD FROM THE RISK OF SUBSTANCE ABUSE
From mood swings to rebellion, the teen years can be a time of risk-taking and limit-testing. Ever-changing social media posts, friendships, classes, clubs, family responsibilities, romantic interests and more freedom can lead to a sense of belonging, excitement, and happiness one moment while resulting in feelings of isolation, anxiety, sadness and low self-esteem in the next.

LGBTQIA+ IN RECOVERY: PROVIDING INCLUSIVE ADDICTION TREATMENT
Tuesday, June 18th, 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM EST
LGBTQIA+ people seeking treatment for an alcohol or substance use disorder face unique challenges that can prevent their sustained recovery.
This is just one reason why LGBTQIA+ patients experience higher rates of alcohol and substance use disorders. But despite a well-documented need for culturally competent, inclusive addiction treatment programs, these patients often find their options are limited.
Join BrightView’s Amy Aydelotte, Director of New Market Development, Jennifer Curran, Addiction Medicine Advanced Practitioner, and Kendra Collins, Case Manager as they discuss how providers can ensure their addiction treatment is considerate of sexual orientation and gender identity.
Attendees will:
- Discuss why LGBTQIA+ patients experience higher rates of addiction
- Learn how bias and stigma impact patient outcomes
- Identify the challenges preventing inclusive treatment
- Understand how to create a safe and supportive environment
This forum includes an open discussion where attendees can ask questions of our presenters.

A PROVIDER'S INTRODUCTION TO SUBSTANCE USE TREATMENT FOR LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL, AND TRANSGENDER INDIVIDUALS |
This publication was developed through a systematic and innovative process in which
clinicians, researchers, program and administrative managers, policymakers, and
other Federal, State, and independent experts were brought together for a series of intensive
sessions. These individuals reviewed and discussed current administrative and clinical
practices for treating substance-abusing lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals and then wrote and edited the resulting document.
The goal of this process was to improve and advance substance abuse treatment for a community of individuals whose health care needs are often ignored, denigrated, or denied.
