Unlocking Potential through Mentorship: A Path to Success for RSBC Students

As I look back at my own journey as a first-time dean starting at an uncertain time in March 2020, I am grateful to my mentors who guided me in leading the Rutgers School of Business–Camden (RSBC) and our incredible faculty and staff to where we are today – a business school with an increasingly stronger footprint, a growing portfolio of programs, and positive growth in enrollments. For me, the value of mentorship was reinforced through the profound impact that my experienced mentors had in supporting my efforts.

With the belief that education extends far beyond the classroom, at RSBC, mentorship is rapidly becoming a cornerstone of support for our students. For students - especially those first in their families to attend college - the journey through college to their career can be both exciting and daunting. Unlike peers whose families may be more familiar with the demands of college and career, many of our students navigate unique challenges in translating academic knowledge into real-world skills and confidence. Mentorship can be beneficial in not only guiding them through academic, professional, and personal growth, but also in making connections to the professional world. For many of our students, these connections can be transformative.

Using these considerations, RSBC has increased its emphasis on expanding mentorship opportunities at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Last year, we began with our Executive-in-Residence program with Steve Selfridge as our inaugural EIR. Over the past three semesters, Steve has given valuable time, wisdom, and connections to many of our students. Our undergraduate peer mentor program sustains with about 40-45 students participating annually. In this program, junior and senior students help their incoming first-year colleagues navigate their college journey and guide personal and professional growth. This peer mentor program is expected to grow with the launch of our Business Honors program starting Fall 2024. Earlier this year, we also expanded our strategies to graduate students with the launch of mentoring programs for our Professional MBA and Online Master of Accountancy programs. Both these graduate programs are in pilot stage with plans to expand with future cohorts. Finally, RSBC’s graduate team is developing an ambassador program for our international students, who navigate not only their academic journeys, but also a transition across continents to another culture and environment.

I ask you to join us in supporting our commitment to success through mentorship. Our programs are an opportunity for you as Rutgers alumni to shape the future of our students and contribute to the success of the next generation of leaders. You bring a wealth of experience, a connection to the Rutgers community, and a clear understanding of what it takes to succeed. Your guidance can be pivotal in helping students develop professional networks, elevate resumes, prepare for interviews, and successfully transition to careers. Mentorship is about creating a ripple effect as our students learn from you to give back by passing on a legacy of support and resilience. I look forward to hearing from you should you be interested in supporting our programs.

RSBC’s MSF-Financial Planning Program Becomes a CFP Board Registered Program

Rutgers School of Business–Camden is delighted to announce that the school’s M.S. in Finance-Financial Planning program has been designated a CFP Board Registered Program by the CFP Board of Standards. Rutgers–Camden’s MSF-Financial Planning program is one of only 57 CFP Board-registered graduate programs in the United States and the only one at Rutgers.

“This is a truly transformational opportunity for our students, who are now eligible to sit for the CFP® exam upon graduation,” said Dean Monica Adya. “Passing the CFP exam is an important step towards CFP certification, which demonstrates a high standard of expertise in financial planning, builds trust with clients, and signals a commitment to ethical standards.”

Three annual admission cycles are offered to allow students to join the program when it fits their schedule, and scholarship opportunities are available via the CFP Board.

Alumna Spotlight

When Porsché LeVere (RSBC ’18) decided to pursue her Professional MBA at Rutgers School of Business–Camden, she was looking for a program that aligned with her aspirations of a career change. Drawn by the PMBA program’s robust curriculum, supportive faculty, cohort model, and convenient location, Porsché found Rutgers to be the perfect fit. With the unwavering support of her cohort, faculty, and her personal support circle, Porsché graduated on time and credits these experiences with shaping her work today in Human Resources.

Today, she continues to channel the resilience and skills honed at Rutgers into making a meaningful impact in her field. Porsché just accepted a new position as Chief of Employee and Labor Relations for Baltimore County.

Porsché highlights the transformative experiences she gained at RSBC, particularly during a cohort trip to Panama and Colombia, where she immersed herself in the rich cultures and formed lasting bonds with classmates. She advises current students to prioritize their commitments, stay organized, and invest in self-care.

Dr. Yuliya Strizhakova, Associate Professor of Marketing, Publishes Article on Sustainability

Drawing upon our extensive prior research on consumer cultural identity, we provide an overview and pose future research questions around sustainability and a) firm's consciousness of the global-local marketplace, b) firm messaging, and c) increased greenwashing and bluewashing.

With the 2023 The Sustainable Development Goals Report confirming that the world is far from reaching the established sustainability goals for 2030, this article focuses this commentary on environmental and social sustainability from the perspective of consumer cultural identity and branding within a global-local marketplace. Our attention is on the firm (multinational and local) and its brand (global or local) as a viable business entity with economic sustainability, that is also engaged with environmental sustainability and social sustainability. We offer substantive questions to guide research around the complexities of corporate sustainability, global and local company/brand actions, and consumer cultural identity.

Dr. Jose Beltran, Assistant Professor of HR/OB, Presented at the PhD Project Anniversary Conference

The research presented focuses on how generative AI, particularly ChatGPT, can assist HR professionals with both strategic and operational HR tasks. We outline eight guidelines for creating effective AI prompts, provides recommendations for prompt verification, and emphasizes that, when properly trained, HR professionals can use AI to reduce burnout and focus more on strategic issues. We conclude with a list of “dos and don’ts” and that when used by sufficiently trained HRM professionals, AI is a very useful tool because it helps complete tasks faster, hopefully reducing their job burnout and allowing them to allocate more time to strategic and long-term issues. In turn, these benefits will likely result in helping achieve the as-of-yet-unrealized aspiration of “having a seat at the table.”

Lean Six Sigma - A "New" Old Tool for Today's Manufacturing Environment

Lean Six Sigma (LSS), a methodology developed to improve efficiency and quality, is a powerful approach for increasing value in an organization. It is experiencing a resurgence in 2024 as businesses face complex economic and operational challenges. Despite being overlooked in recent years, LSS remains a powerful tool for continuous improvement, especially when combined with advanced analytics, AI, and agile methodologies.

If you would like to learn how your accounting and financing professionals can employ LSS to contribute to adding further value in your organization, visit the PEER website or contact Peter McAliney from Professional and Executive Education at Rutgers (PEER) at peter.mcaliney@rutgers.edu.
