K-12 School News

July 2023

Greetings from Westervelt Hall!

Video of Susan Ogden congratulating and celebrating the class of 2023.

Hello Families!

I hope that you are having a wonderful start to the summer!

On June 22nd, we celebrated our amazing 5 graduates. Graduation is always bittersweet because we really are similar to a second family. Many of our students are with us since they are very young, and we certainly feel a loss when they leave RSD.

We also feel a great deal of pride in watching them grow into capable young adults ready to begin the next exciting phase of their lives. Philip is heading into the work world, where he will utilize his exceptional trade skills. Cody, our Valedictorian and “resident comedian,” is entering NTID/RIT to study computer engineering. Ailani is incredibly determined and hard-working and will shine brightly at NTID studying art. Luke is a skilled mathematician and has a great deal of patience, which will serve him well when he achieves his dream of becoming a PE teacher. Jack is often described as a born leader and has spearheaded numerous improvements and events for students. He is going to Gallaudet University to further develop his natural teaching skills.

We wish all our graduates best wishes and look forward to when they visit us. Once a Wildcat, always a Wildcat!

Wishing you a safe and happy summer with your loved ones!

With kind regards,

Susan

Congratulations to the Class of 2023!

Our kindergarteners ended the year studying the life cycle of butterflies and releasing them into our butterfly garden.

Fourth graders recently had an immersive learning experience visiting the state's capital. The trip included a visit to the New York State Museum for the Ellis Island Experience, as well as bowling, rollerskating, and visiting the NYS Capitol and Senator Cooney's office. They also visited the Corning Tower Observation Deck for a breathtaking view of Albany and the Hall of Records to learn about primary sources. The visit to Howe Caverns, where they explored an ancient cave and deepened their understanding of Earth's processes.

Social Media Workshop

RSD students had the opportunity to learn from Max Stossel how social media is designed to be addictive and distracting. They discussed ways to disrupt the negative impacts of social media and better manage the user experience for more enjoyment and a healthier experience.
