K-12 School News

June 2022

Greetings from Westervelt Hall!

Dear RSD Families,

There is certainly excitement in the air as we enter the last month of the school year! Students are excited for the end-of-the-year field trips, final projects, and increased time outdoors learning or playing with friends! As we close out the school year, there will be award ceremonies to acknowledge students' successes and hard work. Please watch for details from your child’s teacher(s) about the date and time of the award ceremony for their grade level. When school ends, you will also receive your child’s final grades for the year, and the progress they have made towards IEP goals.

Every child’s journey is unique, and all of the staff including me are very proud of all of them! They have grown in so many ways, and this is the time of year to celebrate all of their accomplishments. Each student has made progress in their academic skills, increased their knowledge, developed friendships, resolved conflicts, and learned more about themselves. All of us are proud of each one of them!

I hope that you were able to join us on May 26 for our Family Festival. It was a blast! If not, no worries - there will definitely be more opportunities for us to come together during the next school year! We sincerely look forward to many opportunities to see you and your family on the beautiful RSD campus!

If your child is joining us for ESY (Extended School Year, aka “summer school”) or the High School Work Experience, we will see them July 11 to August 19 for fun-filled learning!

Have a safe and happy summer!

With kind regards,

Susan

Students Make Peace Posters

Our high school modified students volunteered at Rochester's Enrico Fermi School No. 17 for United Way's Day of Caring. They made "Peace Posters" that will be used in a neighborhood march/rally that will take place on June 15 around the school to promote peace and rally for non-violence.

Deaf O'Grease Delivers

There was so much talent on display for Deaf O'Grease, an imaginative adaption of Grease by RSD's Vicki Nordquist. The acting was fabulous, with special guest appearances by alumni and staff. Congratulations and thank you to all involved!

Fourth Graders Visit Albany

We are so excited that our fourth graders were able to visit Albany this year. Led by Teacher Patricia Carney and TA Ethan Cole, students visited the NYS Museum, NYS Capital, USS Slater, Corning Tower Observation Deck, and Howes Caverns, with some splash park and bowling fun too.

Families Welcomed Back to Campus

RSD families and staff gathered for food and fun activities on a beautiful evening in late May. Many thanks to all the staff who contributed their time to the Family Festival! We're still smiling as we think about all the fun that was had!

Our Young Adult Pick - "Evie Thomas doesn't believe in love anymore. Especially after the strangest thing occurs one otherwise ordinary afternoon: She witnesses a couple kiss and is overcome with a vision of how their romance began... and how it will end.
