Dear RSU 21 Community,

We have much to celebrate across the district this week as we enter the last two weeks of July.

Our facilities team continues to pick away at the many tasks to make our buildings ready for the upcoming school year. In addition, we had our summer emergency preparedness meeting this week to ensure we are ready should the unthinkable happen.

We are also celebrating the wonderful Terri Baird, KHS' beloved custodian, who finished in the top three for the annual Maine Custodian of the Year award! You can learn more below about the award and Terri's unwavering commitment to our students and staff.

I hope you get the chance to enjoy the beautiful Maine summer weather this weekend, and hopefully, the humidity stays at bay for at least a few more days.

Much love,

Terri Cooper

ReachMyTeach to replace School Messenger

Dear RSU 21 families, students, and staff,

This fall, we are replacing School Messenger with a new platform called ReachMyTeach, a company founded by educators and based right here in southern Maine. This platform makes it easy for all of you to connect in more ways than we currently have access to.

With ReachMyTeach, you are able to send messages via text, email, or WhatsApp. This platform empowers educators to communicate with families and vice versa. It also offers more robust translation services for our families who speak other languages, a vital component of the district’s DEI efforts.

Before selecting this platform to replace School Messenger, we initiated a pilot program involving a variety of staff members in the district and the response has been overwhelmingly positive.

At this time, no further action is necessary on your part other than to be aware that our communication platform is changing.

Please join me in celebrating this exciting transition as we work to make district communications more convenient, modern, and accessible for everyone.

I hope you have a wonderful summer.

Sincerely,

Jamie Jensen

Beloved KHS custodian finishes in top three for Maine Custodian of the Year award

Congratulations to KHS Custodian Terri Baird for finishing in the top three for the 2024 A. Burleigh Oxton Award, which recognizes Maine's top custodian who goes above and beyond their normal duties and is passionate about helping students.

“The love from students and staff is on display every day I walk into the building,” Baird said. “In many ways, it feels like I already won, just being in the top three for this award.”

“Terri’s big heart and dedication to the students and faculty day in and day out is unmatched,” said RSU 21 Facilities Manager Jeremy Bryant. “She has proven herself to be a trusted confidant and advisor to many young people as they work their way through high school. We are so lucky to have her.”

Emergency readiness training

RSU 21 principals, administrators, school resource officers, and members from the Kennebunk Fire Department met this week to review the district's emergency readiness plans.

The group reviewed emergency training calendars, the annual readiness emergency checklist and procedures, and developed goals for each school's incident command teams for the upcoming school year.

ICYMI: Summer facilities improvements

The RSU 21 Maintenance Team made quick work of some much-needed improvements last week, including replacing the septic system at the Transportation Center. All of this work was completed before the July 4 holiday.

Thanks to Jeremy Bryant and his team for leading the effort!

Third-annual Summer Boost is in full swing

RSU 21 is in the third year of its Summer Boost Program, which serves K-8 students. This program runs simultaneously with the district’s High School Credit Recovery Program for students in grades 9-12.

Summer Boost is a skill-based program that provides focused, accelerated learning. The program aims to maintain and enhance student achievement and provide a strong foundation for the start of the upcoming school year.
