Dear RSU 21 Families,

Happy Friday to all! We just completed our first full week of school. As I interacted with students, I can see that this week wasn't any different than the previous two...students continue to nicely adjust to routines and procedures!

Our Schools' Newsletters are in place to keep you up to date with the latest and greatest news. We continue to strengthen our home, school, and community communication to ensure that you are well informed of district happenings. Check out this week's news to see how we celebrate and can support each other. As you know, we are always Better Together.

Recently, we have experienced a few short-term absences in our transportation department. Although we are covering routes now, a driver call-out/absence will require us to immediately pivot in our operations. This pivoting will result in delayed and/or canceled bus routes. A plan has been developed should this happen in the future. Please see the letter from our Transportation Manager, Chris Pasciuto, that was sent out earlier today. We continue to actively recruit potential drivers...if you know potential candidates, please pass those names on to the Transportation Department.

We are anticipating stormy weather this weekend. Please be sure to stay safe and dry--and power up those devices should we experience power outages.

Much Love,

Dr. Cooper

KHS Senior Named

Semi-Finalist in National Merit Scholarship

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation recently announced that KHS Senior Isaac Kahn is a Semifinalist in the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Kahn arose among 16,000 Semifinalist Students throughout the nation being recognized for their academic promise, of which about 15,000 are expected to advance as Finalists in February.

More than 1.5 million students entered the 2024 competition by taking the 2022 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

To become a Finalist, the Semifinalist and a high school official must submit a detailed scholarship application, in which they provide information about the Semifinalist’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received. A Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, and write an essay.

“Isaac has always excelled academically. It’s great to see him recognized as one of the top scholars in the country,” said KHS principal Jeremie Sirois.

“He is an exceptional student and person. I can’t wait to see what he does in the future. I wish him well as he pursues this award.”

Generations Over Lunch:

A New KHS Transition Services Community Connection

Kennebunk High School's School to Work Transition Services Department is connecting students with residents at Sunrise Senior Living at Huntington Common over lunch as a way to help students gain perspective and build community connections.

"This is a new partnership for our students to come and speak with seniors about what life was like when they were a student and what life is like today for our students," said Transition Specialist Megan Murray.

"It's a wonderful experience for everyone. Our plan is to do this three weeks at Huntington Common, then on the fourth week we'll host this lunch at the Lutheran Church Hall where our students will cook and serve."

If you are a local business or community organization interested in partnering with the KHS Transition Program, please contact Megan at [email protected].

We Are Special Services

After many months of hard work, the Maine Department of Education has found that the RSU 21 Special Services Department performed extremely well in its special services audit. The DOE pre-findings were very strong, confirming that our committed and creative staff continue to work hard to meet the needs of students that they support.

The Special Services Department wishes to acknowledge the entire department of educational technicians, related service providers, special education teachers, and in particular, the hard work of Lauren Carney and Arlene Decker. We are better together because of them and our entire team!
