OUR RECENT EVENTS

- Digital LA - On Demand 'Uber for Everything' features a dozen startups.

SANTA MONICA - LA is 'surging' with apps that let you use your phone to order laundry, groceries, massage or a dog walker to arrive at your doorstep.

The CEOs and LA managers of a dozen of the top On Demand apps and services spoke about h ow they built their companies at our Digital LA - On Demand panel at General Assembly in Santa Monica.

Our panel was the most On Demand services assembled at an LA event. The number and wide range of startup services attracted a packed standing-room only audience.

These services are flourishing in LA, in part because an errand like driving to laundry or groceries can take an extra 30 minutes to an hour with traffic and parking. Also, LA has a higher percentage of workers who want flexible hours or are looking for supplemental income between jobs. And in a town where Hollywood execs have personal assistants to run their errands, these apps let everyday feel a little pampered, and frees up their time for life's other activities. With these services to do your errands, you get more time for beach, hikes, gym, movies and time with friends.

Meet 10 of LA's "Uber for Everything" Startups:

Washio: Laundry and Drycleaning

Washion lets you request a Washio rep to pick up, clean and return your laundry and drycleaning from your home, in less than 24 hours. Washio CEO Jordan Metzner said that he focuses on hiring friendly, professional delivery persons, who arrive at your home to pick up your laundry. With strong word of mouth, a fine-tuned real-time marketing strategy, and a systematic business-school style ranking system to evaltuate new markets, Washio has rapidly expanded beyond LA to San Francisco, Chicago, DC, Boston and more.

CurbStand: Valet Network
CurbStand lets you pay for and tip your valet at its network of more than 150 valet stands in LA. CurbStand recently announced it has acquired competitor Curby for an undisclosed amount. CurbStand has used marketing stunts to create publicity and free PR. It launched a two-weekend CurbStand valet at the base of Runyon Canyon, where it's extremely difficult to find parking to hike the trails, with models toting yellow #ValetRunyon signs. CurbStand CEO Serge Gojkovich said the service has expanded to other cities ahead of schedule due to demand.

Mahmee: Baby Care

Mahmee lets you contact a baby care professional to ask advice about breastfeeding, or other baby care questions. Parents find the service extremely useful when the doctor's office has closed, it's after midnight, their baby is crying, and they are frantically trying to figure out what to do. Parents can use the web service to start an online chat or video service with its approved professionals. Founder Melissa Hanna got the idea when she realized her mom, a health care professional, could increase care for her patients with this service.

Zingy: Dog Walking
Zingy is like 'Uber for dogwalkers." Zingy lets you request a pre-approved dog walker to walk your dog. "We're a pet company, not a tech company," said Zingy CEO Tobi Skrovon, who focuses on quality of his dogwalkers because they are taking care of your "furry babies." If any of his dogwalkers gets 3 or fewer stars out of 5, they are removed from the system. The Zingy app lets you request and track the location of your dog walker walking around the neighborhood. Your dogwalker can even note if your dog did #1 of #2 in the apps, so you know if your dog still needs to go out again later. Zingy plans to expand to more pet services for dogs and cats.

Saucey: Alcohol

Saucey app lets you order alcohol, and alcohol packages including bartenders and alcohol supplies such as mixers, salt, lemon, limes, etc. Hosting a party at your house with friends, and need some / more alcohol, just use the app. CEO Chris Vaughn said Saucey did a few stunts to create some promotional buzz. Saucey partnered with LA startup MeUndies for an "overnight party pack" including some wine / drinks and fresh underwear.

Soothe: Massage
Soothe app lets you order a licensed professional massage therapist to arrive with a massage chair or table at your home in under an hour. Soothe CEO and founder Merlin Kauffman sees the massage industry expanding from a once or twice a year luxury, to a several times a year service. At-home massages eliminates the stress of driving, parking and trying to book an appointment during limited spa business hours. Merlin said he hires only certified, professional massage therapists, who also benefit because they get more revenue per massage than at a day spa.

Instacart: Groceries
Instacart lets you place an order for groceries, and one of its deliver persons shops and delivers them to your doorstep. Instacart started in SF and launched in LA last summer, providing a code to our Silicon Beach Fest users. LA manager Justin said they've received a rapid increase in users since launching in LA.

Luxe Valet: Mobile Valet
Luxe Valet lets you request a blue-jacketed Luxe Valet to meet you at your destination to park your car. When you're ready to leave, request a valet to deliver your car. You can see the valet going to get and return your car in the app's map, so you can see when your car is arriving. You can also rate your valet within app. Luxe basically eliminates the 10-15 minutes it can take looking for parking by having the valet come to you. Luxe Valet started in San Francisco where parking is extremely difficult. VP of Operations Hans Young identified LA as an ideal target market. He launched Luxe Valet starting in downtown LA and Santa Monica, and recently added Hollywood, with plans to cover more of LA. Rates depending on number of hours your car is parked, approxmiately $5 for a few hours to $15 for all day.

Handstand: Personal Trainer
Handstand lets you find a personal trainer by neighborhood, price, and type of workout, with a click to call or book an appointment. For example, if you want to find a personal trainer who does pilates and strength training for under $50 per hour in Beverly Hills, you can find several with a few clicks. CEO Tiffany Hakimianpour said she created the app because she wanted a trainer, and couldn't find a directory that let her easily sort, so she made one. The app is a directory of trainers who sign up for the app. The user schedules an appointment and location with the trainer on their own.

Buddytruk: Truck
Buddytruk CEO Brian Foley was moving his apartment, and needed a truck to move his furniture. He realized there should be a service that lets you request someone with a truck to help you move, to take the hassle out of finding, renting, and driving a truck. So he created Buddytruk, which is like asking a friend with a truck to help you move a big screen TV, moving boxes, or more.

Purple: Gas
Purple will let you request a gas delivery person to fill your car with gas, eliminating the need to f'ill 'er up' yourself. Ideal usage: Your car is near empty, you have errands across town, and you're in back-to-back meetings? Use Purple to send a gas delivery who can fill your car when it's parked on the street or in a garage without you having to be there. The service hasn't launched yet, but plans to launch soon.

In addition to these services, there are many other On Demand apps in LA, which we can feature at a future event.

- Digital LA - Virtual Reality
for Movies and Games.  Experts from Fox Studios, WME, and leading VR development studios shared their insights on the industry and content in VR.  VR is rapidly increasing, especially with the buzz from the Sundance VR lounge, where many traditional filmmakers who tried VR for 15 minutes said they wanted to start making VR films.  VR content combines elements of both movies and games. A good VR project is immersive, interactive, evokes emotion, is not too shaky, and has decent graphics to transport the viewer.  Several VR startups set up demo stations in our VR Demo Arcade, so people could try Oculus VR, many for the first time. Photos and summary available soon!

- Digital LA - On Demand Startups.  Startup CEO founders pitched their startups and discussed how to start, market and grow apps that let you order everything from laundry to a massage to groceries and gas with your phone.   Speakers included: CEOs of Washio (laundry), Saucey (alcohol), Curbstand (valet), Buddytruk (truck), Zingy (dog walker) Handstand (personal trainers), Mahmee (baby care), Purple (gas), and the LA managers of Instacart (groceries) and Luxe Valet (mobile valet) more pitched at General Assembly Santa Monica.  Photos and summary available soon.

- Digital LA - Bands Go Social
Make sure your songs are the best they can be, then get professional graphics for your web site and social media, collect emails, and engage fans, said music industry experts on our Digital LA - Bands Go Social panel at the House of Blues on Sunset Strip. Tag PICS.

Music experts gave 7 tips on how indie bands should do social at our pre-NAMM panel in the House of Blues Foundation Room.

- Digital LA - Super Ad Bowl @ IgnitedSpaces. Get an idea that relates to your audience, and go all out to create the content and promote it, was the advice from creators of Super Bowl ads and Doritos contest finalists at our Digital LA - Super Ad Bowl panel at IgnitedSpaces in Hollywood.

"We had some ideas, and we pitched them," said Frank and Jeff of Committee LA, the Venice-based agency which crated the Wix.com ad campaign. Their campaign features five athlete celebrities who decide to start their own companies, using the Wix.com platform to build their sites in the ads. For example, Brett Favre has opened his "Farve and Carve Charcuterie", and gets help from Entourage's Rex Lee on how to pronounce 'charcuterie.' 'Say Coo, like a dove," Rex advises in this YouTube teaser. http://youtu.be/8blTqgr3v_M

The creators panel included: EpicLLOYD of Epic Rap Battles of History (won three Streamys Awards), Freddie Wong and Matt Arnold creators of Video Game High School (won three Streamys Awards), DeStorm, Shira Lazar of What's Trending, and Margaret Dunlap writer on Lizzie Bennet Diaries (won two Streamys and previously won first interactive Emmy), and Cassey Ho of Blogilates. Multichannel networks have received international business attention after Disney's acquisition of Maker Studios. They are growing to do more than aggregate creators, including management, development, analytic tools, marketing, and brand deals, said MCN Presidents and senior execs on the Executive panel. Speakers included Dan Weinstein President of the Collective, Will Keenan President of Endemol Beyond, Larry Shapiro Co-President of Big Frame, Vanessa Del Muro SVP Talent at StyleHaul, Khudor Annous of Fullscreen, and Jorge Granier CEO of Latin Everywhere.
