The Fanny Appleton Bridge

Design and Construction
Thursday, August 27, 2026 | 5:15 - 8:30 p.m.

The Frances “Fanny” Appleton Pedestrian Bridge in Boston, MA is a 750-ft long structure, with 550-ft of elevated steel bridge including a 222-ft main span that mimics the arch spans of the Longfellow Bridge but with a very different and contemporary approach, curving “ribbonlike” through existing trees.

The main span is an arched vierendeel deck truss made up of diverging 18-in diameter steel pipe arches and HSS spandrel columns, and tub girders.

The entire superstructure was modeled in 3-D to capture stresses of steel erection through the temperature induced stresses of the jointless, curved superstructure.

The architectural design also included steel Wye approach piers with an inset detail. Additional design for vibration was included to avoid the need of tuned-mass dampers. During construction, testing of the built structure along with measuring the response to groups of pedestrians was performed to validate the design.

This walking tour presentation will explore key elements and challenges of designing and constructing the bridge, which crosses Storrow Drive and opened in August 2018.
