While RSVPs are not required to attend all programs, they are highly encouraged to add events to your personal calendars, and to provide us with a headcount for catering and swag.


After RSVPing, you will receive a confirmation email. In the email, under the event date and time, click on the provided options to add the event to your calendar.

Kick-off: First-Gen Friday with BPS Alumni Social & "I am the ONE" Campaign

Visit the Center for First-Gen & Ed Equity as we kick-off the week's celebration with our monthly First-Gen Friday alongside the center's BPS Alumni Social for Boston Public School alumni! Students, faculty, and staff who identify as first-gen and anyone who graduated from a Boston Public School are invited to have lunch in the center and participate in our new "I am the ONE Who..." campaign.

Understanding SuffolkONE: The State of First-Gen at Suffolk University

Join us as we update the Suffolk community on programming from our center! We will be sharing the center's definitions and new language around first-gen, including our new "first-to-advance" lingo. The center's executive director and director of first-generation student initiatives will share some remarks, and we will hear from our guest speaker, Suffolk's very own Assistant Provost for Retention and Double Ram, Peter Fowler, MEd. Students, faculty, and staff are welcome to attend.

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 7

Chew On This: First-Gen Edition

The Smith Commons, Sargent Hall 5th Floor

The Center for Student Diversity & Inclusion and Counseling, Health, & Wellness will be hosting a special edition of the Chew On This series. This session will include BIPOC and first-gen student panelists sharing their experiences maintaining mental and physical health, challenges they have experienced, and ways in which they are working to or have overcome them.

Movie Night: In the Heights

The Office of Student Leadership & Involvement and the Center for First-Gen & Ed Equity is hosting a movie night and stream the hit musical, In the Heights, which among many storylines, includes a perspective on the the BIPOC first-gen student experience. Stop by for some popcorn and renditions of salsa music!

 

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 8

Sharing First-Gen Strategies and Experiences: Building Community with Faculty & Staff

The Center for Teaching & Scholarly Excellence; Diversity, Access, & Inclusion; The Center for Student Diversity & Inclusion; the Center for First-Gen & Ed Equity will host an informal space for faculty and staff to share best practices and experiences supporting first-gen students, as well as what they hope to see for community building for first-gen faculty and staff. We will discuss the potential creation of a new Employee Resource Group (ERG) and begin gathering data on who identifies as first-gen or "first-to-advance" faculty and staff.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 9

Here Today, Discovering Tomorrow: Travel, Leadership, and Scholarly Opportunities Through Suffolk

Stoll Rooms 1 and 2, Sawyer 5th Floor

Ever wonder how other first-gen students first began participating in activities such as study abroad, scholarly and leadership programs, or utilized the career stipend? This session will include a panel of first-gen students on campus who have taken advantage of opportunities found with Study Abroad, McNair Scholars, Counseling, Health, & Wellness, the Center for Student Diversity & Inclusion, and the Career Center. After the discussion, we invite you to mingle with staff during an ice cream social and learn more about each program and department featured in the panel.

 

Inaugural Induction Ceremony of Tri-Alpha

Keches, Sargent 1st Floor

5:30pm - 7:00pm

First-Gen Celebration Week will conclude with the inaugural induction of the Suffolk University Eta Theta Chapter of the national honor society for first-generation college students, Tri-Alpha. Inductees will receive their certificates and pins, and have the opportunity to meet other first-generation students, faculty, and staff at the reception to follow. Inductees will receive a seperate email and invitation-only RSVP link.

Donation Drive for the New England Center and Home for Veterans

Monday, October 30 - Thursday, November 9

The Center for Community Engagement, Veterans Upward Bound, Veteran Services, and Veteran Student Organization will be collecting donations for the New England Center and Home for Veterans, located here in downtown Boston, in honor of Veteran's Day and those supported in the Higher Education Act of 1965.


Donation boxes will be placed in the Center for Community Engagement on the 4th Floor of Sawyer, at Veteran Services on the 8th floor of Sawyer, and in the Center for First-Gen & Ed Equity on the 7th Floor of 73 Tremont Street. You must scan the QR code that is placed by or on the donation box in order to document your donation.

A History of Firsts: First-Gen and Veterans Library Display

Mildred F. Sawyer Library, 73 Tremont, 1st Floor

Monday, October 30 - Thursday, November 9

Books, posters, and items depicting history of first-gen and veteran experiences will be on display thanks to the team at the Mildred F. Sawyer Library. Information about the Higher Education Act of 1965 as well as memorabilia from members of the Veteran Student Organization, including alumni from the center's Veteran's Upward Bound, will be showcased as well.
