September Member Luncheon
Libraries and the Midway:
What’s Next?
featuring Catherine Penkert,
Director of Libraries for the City of St. Paul

In Saint Paul, libraries today are about people. Through extensive community engagement, Saint Paul Public Library (SPPL) has built a big vision for its buildings: invest in libraries that are safe, inviting, affirming, and comfortable for people of all cultures, abilities, and communities. With an $8.1 million investment from the City of Saint Paul, SPPL will build a new Hamline Midway Library that maximizes accessibility, environmental sustainability, and safety through design. With a new library building, everyone will enter through the same pathway and the same front door. This state-of-the-art library will integrate history into a new structure that also reflects the cultures of today’s community. This library will bridge from the past to the future while adding much-desired community space that will serve residents for generations to come.

At our September monthly luncheon, learn more about plans for the new library and how the Saint Paul Public Library supports Midway residents.
Catherine Penkert, director of Saint Paul Public Library, will join us to talk about the new Hamline Midway Library, the multi-year community engagement process that is informing the Library’s capital work, and the full vision to transform libraries in Saint Paul.

University of St. Thomas' neighborhood peacemaker steps down

Amy Gage, who for more than eight years has served as a counselor, diplomat, peacemaker and troubleshooter for the University of St. Thomas in its complicated relationship between its St. Paul neighbors and its off-campus students, is stepping down.

At 65, Gage said she's looking forward to starting a pair of part-time jobs that won't involve middle-of-the-night phone calls from neighbors seething over loud student parties or garbage-strewn yards.

"This is not an easy job," she said of the work for which she's won widespread acclaim for responsiveness and evenhandedness. "I always looked at it as, 'How could I bridge the gap?'"

While the annual churn of thousands of students into St. Thomas' surrounding neighborhoods makes a permanent peace hard to achieve between homeowners and student renters, many credit Gage — who lives less than a mile from campus — for softening the tone. She's bridged divides, encouraged communication and changed some minds say neighbors, students and school officials. Read the full story here.
