MOHR impact
July 2018
Meet area candidates for breakfast
Candidates for state office are meeting soon with members of the disability and service provider communities at five locations around the state, and MOHR urges members and families served to attend. Please RSVP with Cody Holliday by July 17.

  • Savage (Twin Cities) - July 23 - 9 to 10:30 a.m., Perkins Restaurant, 14435 Highway 13.

Brief programs, industry reps sharing perspectives, candidate responses and moderated Q&A sessions are planned. Come and ask candidates what they know about day programs, and about the quality of life that people with disabilities should have. The breakfasts are organized by ARRM, which is providing muffins and beverages.
Our work is important for those we serve
After spending nearly 30 years in this field, I am still amazed by the impact we have on the lives of the individuals we serve and their families. I am with them when I say that the services provided by MOHR members are effective and enrich people’s lives tremendously.

It’s exciting for me to have this opportunity to work closely with our members, and I am looking forward to meeting more people throughout the state and touring their programs. Hearing your stories and learning about the successes and accomplishments of the people you serve are at the heart of our mission.

That mission was advanced under the leadership of MOHR President Mike Burke, whose tireless work and trips across the state have helped make our unified organization what it is today. We owe him our thanks and gratitude for a job well done.

We will continue to work hard to find a solution to the 7 percent cut and to achieve sustainable funding for all. With more than 100 community-connected programs, we are the catalyst that will make a difference in the lives of the people we support.

It is also imperative that we remain engaged in the rollout of the new Employment Services, and to advocate for timely training and communication to make them successful for anyone who wishes to use them. Working together, we can strengthen our programs and support each other in the important work we do.

In our next issue, I will introduce myself and share more about my professional background. In the meantime, if you need anything, please feel free to contact me. Thanks for all you do to better the lives of the people we serve!

Julie Johnson , President-elect of MOHR
Voter registration drive week July 16-20
National Disability Voter Registration week is July 16 to 20, and MOHR is encouraging members to set up voter registration at their locations. This isn't about supporting any particular candidate, but helping the individuals served to exercise their rights. REV UP Minnesota is this year's theme. Contact Heidi Smith for more info.

We need your Outstanding Employers
MOHR members, please nominate one of your best for an Outstanding Disability Employer Award from MOHR.
The organization recognizes several each year, but needs your nominations to make it happen. Please send them by August 7.

The awards coincide with National Disability Employment Awareness Month in October. Let's show them that Minnesota is among the best for employers!
Learn more from experts about the 7 percent cut and other topics from Rise President Lynn Noren, who joins parent Jen Reiter and Sara Grafstrom, director of member advocacy and government relations for ARRM. They were interviewed on the "Disability Viewpoints" program to be released in August. Hosted by Mark Hughes and produced by CTV North Suburbs, the monthly talk show covers multiple disability issues.
