FEBRUARY MAINTENANCE GUIDELINES
  • Apply Image Herbicide Consumer Concentrate to eliminate Annual Bluegrass (Poa annua), common chickweed, henbit, dollarweed, wild onion and wild garlic.
  • Annually apply ferti-lome Fruit Tree Fertilizer to fruit and nut trees and apply Sure Green Slow Release Fertilizer 18-6-12 to all trees and shrubs.
  • November through February are the recommended months to apply ferti-lome Systemic Drench to your young pines for tip borers.
  • When Oklahoma temps are over 40 degrees, apply ferti-lome Dormant Oil Spray to your to deciduous trees and shrubs to control overwintering insects. NEVER use dormant oil sprays on evergreen trees and shrubs.
  • Pre-emerge with Sure Green (Surflan), Hi-Yield Turf & Ornamental Weed and Grass Stopper (a summer annual herbicide), ferti-lome For All Seasons II, orzalyn, or ferti-lome Broadleaf Weed control with Gallery to turf areas through mid-March to prevent summer weeds such as crabgrass from germinating.
  • Soil temperatures determine when weeds emerge in winter and spring. Most weeds germinate after three consecutive days of 50 degrees soil temperature at a depth of 2 inches. You may use the mesonet web site for Oklahoma to monitor soil temperature (mesonet.org). They also have a free app for Apple and android phones. Better to be sure by applying pre-emerge early rather than too late.
  • Post-emerge to help control winter weeds. Apply Hi-Yield Killzall as well as ferti-lome Weed Free Zone on dormant Bermuda when temperatures are above 50 degrees.
  • Plant container and ball and burlap (B&B) trees.
  • Plant your vegetable garden with potatoes, onion, radishes, broccoli, etc. using and organic product such as our own Redbud Compost to rejuvenate your soil. For clay soils, use gypsum to loosen soil and add calcium to keep down blossom end rot in your tomatoes.
  • Apply Captan Fruit Tree Spray by Bonide or organic Copper Soap Fungicide by Natural Guard Ferti-lome or Liquid Cap by Monterey to peach and nectarine trees to prevent peach leaf curl before bud swell.
  • At the end of the month, start garden seeds in a controlled environment to ensure readiness by the first week of April.
  • Spring blooming shrubs such as Forsythia may be pruned immediately after flowering
  • Quick Tip: For best fertilizer application results, we recommend soil testing through the OSU Tech Center At NW 10th and Portland In OKC.
