A Message for Yom Ha’Atzmaut from our Community Israeli Shlicha (and RTFH Religious School Teacher)
In Israel, we don’t move from sorrow to joy, we carry both together. Each year, we pause for Yom HaZikaron. A day of remembrance. A day where the country stands still, literally.
We remember those who gave their lives, and we feel the weight of their absence. And then, as the sun sets, something unique happens. We transition directly into Yom Ha’atzmaut, Independence Day.
No separation. No distance. Just a deep, emotional shift, from silence to celebration.
Because our independence is not separate from our loss. It exists because of it. In a country so small, where every story feels personal, we learn to hold complexity:
to grieve and to celebrate,
to remember and to keep living,
to carry pain—and still choose hope.
This is the Israeli spirit.
This is how memory becomes meaning,
and how remembrance gives life to independence.
