Kintsugi; Finding Beauty in Brokenness

Join us as we host award-winning Jewish educator Jane Tuv to facilitate the workshop experience “Kintsugi; Finding Beauty in Brokenness. ” In this workshop, we’ll explore the Japanese art of Kintsugi, or the practice of mending broken pottery with gold. Jane has hosted this workshop for audiences all over the US, including some families of hostages who remain in captivity.
The Velveteen Rabbi writes, “Torah teaches that we are beings of the earth: we too can become pure and whole not despite our brokenness, but in and through it. Or as Leonard Cohen wrote, “There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.”
Kintsugi is the ancient Japanese art of repairing broken ceramics using glue mixed with gold, silver or platinum. It can symbolize life’s journey in that sometimes unexpected events shatter our lives, dreams, and aspirations. Instead of hiding our cracks and wounds, we embrace and celebrate imperfections using precious metals. Kintsugi can help us reframe certain events, turning adversity into something resilient, beautiful, and transformative.
In this workshop, we will “Break and repair a Japanese bowl as you reconnect with your inner self, bond with other community members, and learn a beautiful new art form that heals both heart and vessel. This practice will be supported by Jewish spiritual texts.”
This program is made possible through a grant from the Women of Reform Judaism (WRJ). A special catered lunch and all materials are included for 35 participants. Current WoCo members can reserve their spot for $18 until August 14. Registration will then open up to non-members and guests for $36. *Accessibility notes: This program will be held in the garden room. We will break a bowl with a small hammer and glue it back together with gold paint. You will need to carry your bowl home.
