Our Mission:
Repairing Homes, Revitalizing Communities and Rebuilding Lives
A Note From Our Executive Director
Hello Friends!

I hope you continue to remain safe and healthy during these challenging times. With all of the cold weather and wintery storms, our team has been especially busy helping neighbors in need across the county. While there is still much to be done, we are very happy with what we have been able to accomplish so far in the new year. In fact, I am delighted to share that the RTMC Team has just served our 100th vulnerable homeowner this fiscal year! Our 100th homeowner, Ms. T., was thrilled to receive new gutters and repairs to her house siding to address water and moisture that was entering her home. She is now safe, dry and warm at home.

Please know how much we miss all of our wonderful volunteers and supporters and look forward to future opportunities to see you. Don't forget to mark your calendar with our new National Rebuilding Day dates: September 11th and 12th, 2021. We hope to complete critical home repairs for 20 homeowners that weekend. Additionally, keep your eye out for updates on our annual RTMC Golf Tournament, which will be held on October 4, 2021. In the meantime, please know how grateful we are for all the ways you support our mission.

All the best,

Spotlight on a [Re]Builder: Pazit Aviv
RTMC is fortunate to have Pazit Aviv (pictured above with her family) as a member of our Board of Directors. As the Village Coordinator at the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services Aging and Disability Services, Pazit has brought her deep knowledge and expertise to our mission and has become an invaluable resource.

Pazit is a true collaborator in the community and helps to bring people and groups together in service to the most vulnerable members of our community. Using a neighbor to neighbor approach, Pazit is a driving force in helping vulnerable neighbors age in place within Montgomery County.

Here is some of what she had to say about her experience with RTMC:

"I first became involved with RTMC through my work as a member of the City of Gaithersburg Hoarding Task Force. In my role as Village Coordinator for Montgomery County, I help to build coalitions that enhance capacities of nonprofit and government organization to facilitate aging in community. The work I do now with our community aligns directly with RTMC’s mission, which is to protect vulnerable residents and help them to remain safely in their homes. Aging in place is a human right. Montgomery County specifically has an increasing aging population and I am happy to play a part to keep vulnerable neighbors safe."

Congrats to Lindsay Luhn, who has been promoted to Senior Manager of Program Services!
Congratulations to Lindsay Luhn, who has been promoted to Senior Manager of Program Services and will now lead RTMC’s Program Services area. Lindsay will oversee all program operations, including homeowner relations, managing repairs budgets and project management. She is proudly from Montgomery County and has worked with affordable housing in various capacities over the years. For over a decade, Lindsay has been involved with home repair programs, first as a volunteer, and then as summer staff with the Appalachia Service Project.

Lindsay holds a BS in Environmental and Ecological Science from Elon University and recently earned her Executive Certification in Home Modifications from University of Southern California's Leonard Davis School of Gerontology. She has proven to be an invaluable resource to RTMC and her leadership will exponentially improve the way we serve our homeowners!

Keeping Up With Our Program Team
In addition to the ongoing pandemic, many of our homeowners have been adversely impacted by the recent spell of cold weather. Thankfully, our team, including our fabulous AmeriCorps Members Joni Keaton and Kristen Miller (picture above with homeowner Mr. W.), has sprung into action to assist many homeowners in need. Here are a few highlights:

Our neighbor, Ms. L., had a multitude of issues that were affecting her ability to remain safe, warm and healthy at home. Thanks to our general contractor partner, Victor Aquino, and his team at VAQ Renovations, Ms. L. now has a new sliding door, replaced roof shingles and newly-repaired windows to keep her home airtight and free of leaks and drafts.

Our neighbor, Mr. W., was living without a working stove or consistent source of heat. The situation was jeopardizing his ability to remain safely at home. The RTMC team was able to install a new stove and repair his HVAC system so Mr. W. can now prepare hot meals in the warmth and comfort of his own home.
Did you know that falls are the leading cause of fatal injury and the most common cause of nonfatal trauma-related hospital admissions among older adults? As such, RTMC takes fall prevention for our homeowners very seriously. Our Construction Supervisor, Raul Pineda, (pictured above) recently oversaw an important bathroom renovation focused on fall prevention for our neighbor, Mr. B., who has mobility issues caused by an amputated leg and had been hopping over the lip of a bathtub for years in order to shower. He had a constant fear of falling. To improve safety and reduce the likelihood of a fall, we built Mr. B an accessible walk-in shower with an extended handheld showerhead. Special thanks to general contractor, Joe Lodmell, a longtime friend of RTMC, and his team at JML Remodeling for their role in this critical repair. We are thrilled to have been able to make Mr. B’s home more accessible for him.

When we come together to help one another, we strengthen our community while improving the lives of others. With these repairs now complete, we are ready to move forward diligently and continue to serve as many homeowners as we can this winter!
