Art Show Sunday, October 19,

"Look Again"

When we listen to the needs around us, it is easy to be overwhelmed. We have our own list of what needs to get done, then our family and friends who ask for our support, and then in church, in our faith, we are called to offer care and welcome to others—remember in Jewish law it is a grave offense to not welcome the stranger, the traveler, or one in need. The beautiful and meaningful art in our Sanctuary reminds us this coming Sunday that the gift of creativity can be a key part of our welcome to our wider community! Celebrating imagination and vision, color, shape, and statement are all ways of inviting others to find themselves and find the sacred in this community. Join us for worship at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.

There is no Seekers, Early Care, Nursery Care, or Sunday School this Sunday because of the art show.

First Reading: Dorothy Day

Scripture: Luke 18:1-8

Caring for Each Other

In our thoughts and prayers:

  • Sue Hammond has been moved to hospice care.
  • Ben Bohren has undergone surgery, and we pray for healing and patience.
  • Prayers for Rick and Cheryl Napier on the passing of Rick’s sister Janice from life to Life.
  • Kim Lara-Kane is asking for prayers for her wife, Cari, as she awaits medical tests. Prayers for Kim, too, as she waits with her.
  • We pray for all who have lost loved ones to gun violence. Help us to end the senseless and hateful use of firearms - strengthen our faith and our voice in opposition to the deadly proliferation of weapons in our society.

Ongoing concerns:

  • Tom Miller
  • Floyd Orr
  • Carl Parish

Please send prayer requests to Pastor Jake at jake@redlandsucc.org

Groups & Gatherings

Bridge lessons begin October 20!

Bridge is a card game that takes only a few lessons to learn and a lifetime to master. Heather & Dan Abushanab love this game and want to widen our circle of people who can play! A few RUCC members have expressed interest in learning to play, so Heather will hold a series of eight lessons to get them (and you!) started. We need at least four people to commit to the full series to make the lessons productive.

This first series will be on Mondays, 1-3 p.m., beginning October 20. Classes will meet Oct. 20, 27, Nov. 3, 17, 24, and Dec 1, 8 at Heather and Dan’s house. A final session consisting mainly of play will be on Dec 22 or after Christmas, depending on the desires of the group. No prior experience with Bridge is required, but if you have played in the past and would like to refresh your knowledge of the game, you are welcome! Contact Heather Abushanab at Heather@Abushanab.com to sign up or get more information.

RUCC Book Group, November 2

The next meeting of the RUCC Book Group will be on November 2 at noon in Founders Room. Mark Leggett will present the book, The Best Minds by Jonathan Rosen.

“Brave and nuanced . . . an act of tremendous compassion and a literary triumph.” —The New York Times. “A story about friendship, love, and the price of self-delusion, The Best Minds explores the ways in which we understand—and fail to understand—mental illness”-Amazon review.

Game and Conversation Night!

For over a year, Ricky and I have hosted Game and Conversation Night. It has been a pleasure to enjoy the company of so many of you. The next three months at RUCC are so busy with wonderful events, we cannot fit game night into the schedule! So, the next Game and Conversation Night will be in January 2026. Ricky and I would like to pass the baton to new hosts. If you are interested in organizing and hosting game night about once a month in 2026, could you contact me? - Ginny Cruz

Love Knows No Borders

During Sunday School on October 12, we read the parable of the Good Samaritan and discussed what it means to love our neighbors. Then we colored these pages (pictured below), which will be taken to Washington, D.C. by our Conference Minister, Rev. Rachael Pryor, later this month.

Thank you to our kids and teachers for sending these messages of love to Washington, D.C! Follow this link for more information about this National UCC campaign.

Helping Hands

Hospitality needs YOU to make Fellowship Time happen!

Are you an amazing baker, great at savory dips, make coffee like a barista, or love to buy prepared foods and make tummies nice and full? Well then, Hospitality needs your support for Fellowship Time! If you are interested in helping with set-up, clean-up, or bringing food, we would love for you to sign up. The goal is to schedule through the end of the year and ensure that this special time for the congregation is not only full of great conversations, but delicious treats as well. Please use this link to navigate to the sign-up, pick your spot, and get ready to make folks happy. If you have questions, please reach out to Kim Lara-Kane.

Caring for Kin

In the month of October, we are collecting shelf-stable Thanksgiving holiday food items. We will give these items to Redlands Family Service in early November to help them prepare to support families and individuals in need during the holiday. Commonly-requested items include boxed mashed potatoes and stuffing, canned vegetables and pumpkin, and baking supplies.

Racial Justice Message

The sheriff’s office for metro Phoenix spent millions budgeted for compliance costs in a racial profiling case over Joe Arpaio’s immigration crackdowns on things that had little or nothing to do with a court-ordered overhaul of the agency.

The expert’s report criticized the use of compliance money to fund personnel costs and tasks not connected to the overhaul. It also pointed out inappropriate spending: $2.8 million for surplus body-worn camera licenses that went beyond the court’s orders; $1.5 million in renovations in the relocation of an internal affairs office; over $1.3 million to buy 42 vehicles; and an $11,000 golf cart to bring staff from headquarters to the internal affairs operation.

Environmental Justice Message

For the first time, renewable energy has overtaken coal as the primary source of electricity around the world, a new report says, indicating a shift in the global reliance on environmentally harmful fossil fuels. Renewable energy contributed 34.3% of all global electricity generated in the first half of 2025, while coal fell to 33.1%, the energy think tank Ember found.
