Celebrations Sunday, September 28 ~ Rev. Erin Beardemphl preaching

Psalm 91 speaks of God's shelter and comfort, and emphasizes the reader's safety there. What is it that we imagine when we think of safety? Is there a symbol or a face that brings these words to mind? I look forward to joining with you all in an exploration of just that.

Youth Scripture: Psalm 146: 1-2

Art, for Heaven's Sake!

OCTOBER 17, 18, AND 19 - Art, for Heaven's Sake!

We need your help to make this event a success. During the next three weeks, the art show committee will be recruiting members and friends to help with the show.

We especially need help:

  • Setting up the show (Thursday, October 16, and Friday, October 17)
  • Setting up pop-up canopies, helping with lighting and decorating, assisting artists in setting up their booths.
  • Making appetizers or cookies for Friday night.
  • Serving cookies and appetizers Friday night.
  • Friday night, Saturday 11:00-1:00 and 3:00-7:00, and Sunday 1:00-3:00
  • Providing brief breaks for artists during the show, checking the bathrooms for supplies, wiping down tables in the eating area, emptying trash, greeting, etc.

Sign-ups will be available before church in the Narthex and after church in Covenant Hall or contact Pam Dunn.

You can also help us advertise the Art Show. QR codes and posters are available at the sign-up table and in the church office for you to notify your colleagues and friends.

Also, please “like” us on our Facebook page, www.facebook.com/artforheavenssake

Every time you “like,” comment on, and/or “share” the art show posts, potential guests and community members are introduced to our annual art festival.

Social Justice

Racial Justice Message

There is no such thing as a Christian Nationalist. The two ideologies are incompatible. Any form of nationalism does not comport with Jesus’ message of loving our neighbor or welcoming the stranger in our midst, therefore, cannot be Christian. White Supremacy, which hides under the cloak of Christian Nationalism, is the enslaver’s religion, twisting the Bible to defend the indefensible. It must be rejected and rooted out. Not by violence, but by steadfastly following the teachings of an ancient Jewish rabbi living in an occupied land who ultimately taught his disciples that, though the days look dark, resurrection, like the sun, will always meet us.

Environmental Justice Message

Across dozens of studies, [Sarah] Sajedi and her co-authors found that the average person might ingest between 39,000 and 52,000 plastic particles each year, "with bottled water consumers ingesting up to 90,000 more particles than tap water consumers." "Drinking water from plastic bottles is fine in an emergency, but it is not something that should be used in daily life. People need to understand that the issue is not acute toxicity — it is chronic toxicity," she warned.

Message from the Immigrant Justice Team

The RUCC Immigrant Justice Team is hosting a Know Your Rights training course after the service in the RUCC sanctuary on Sunday September 28 from 7-8. All are welcome. After this training, we will be organizing RUCC members to be lookouts for potential ICE activity during the Indonesian church services.

Other plans include:

  • Visits to the Adelanto detention center, organized by CHIRLA.
  • Doing outreach with local businesses about an upcoming Know Your Rights training geared toward employers. This is a chance to raise awareness about ICE raids and their threat to our communities, and to provide training to prepare for them.

If you are interested in any of these projects, please talk with Sara Schoonmaker or email her at saraschoonmaker@proton.me.
