covenant basket at redlands ucc

It's Covenant Season at RUCC

Covenant Sunday is Nov. 3rd (All Saints' Sunday)

At Redlands UCC, every member makes an annual covenant with the church. Whether you’ve been here since its inception in 1975, or are covenanting for the first time, the expectation is that membership is intentionally renewed each year with reflection and prayer. Our 2025 Covenant Booklets are now available, and I highly encourage you to have them ready for our special Covenant Sunday service on November 3rd, when we will also be observing All Saints' Sunday and Communion.

At this service, there will be a time to bring your covenant forward and place it in a basket in front of the altar, where they will be blessed. We will also have a ceremony to celebrate and welcome our first-time covenanting members. If you cannot be here on Nov. 3rd, you can turn in your covenant to the office beforehand (by hand or by mail) and we’ll place it in the basket and bless it with the others.

What happens to my covenant? Your financial covenant goes directly to the Treasurer without the pastor or any church leaders knowing your giving. Your spiritual covenant goes directly to the pastor, again held in confidence. Your time and talent covenant goes to the office administrator who processes the survey and shares the information with the relevant area leaders.

Please contact me if you have any questions or would like to discuss this important time in the life of our church. Here are some dates you may find helpful:

  • Pastries with the Pastor information session before church, Oct. 27, 9:30-10:15 a.m.
  • Covenant writing workshop, Oct. 29, 7:00 p.m., online
  • Sacred Saturday, Nov. 2, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. - a time for contemplation and discernment

Reverend Joe

Craig Hadley guest preacher from paradox church

A message from our guest preacher

Sunday, October 13, 2024 ~~ 21st Sunday after Pentecost ~~ "The Omnipresence of Contentment"

Have you ever watched the Olympics, and then, after the competition is over, the gold medalist victoriously declares, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me!"? While we appreciate an athlete's greatness to thrive under pressure at the highest level, the introduction of this verse raises all kinds of questions about who God allows to do all things and who God allows to only do some things. Today, we will be discussing the context of these famous words from Paul, the subversive grace lying underneath their surface, and the implications of these ideas as they lead us to more fully live in God's love today.

Rev. Dr. Craig Hadley is Lead Pastor at Paradox Church in Redlands. Craig's greatest joy is to walk through life with others as they and he experience the ever-expanding and overflowing excess of God's love.

Sunday's Scriptures

Youth Reading: John 14:27

Focus Scripture: Philippians 4:4-14

Concerns

  • Prayers for the victims of Hurricanes Milton and Helene, and prayers of thanksgiving for all the first responders working hard to protect people during natural disasters. Prayers for compassion and wisdom as we rebuild.
  • Carol Robb continues to recover from knee surgery and is craving human contact while homebound. Please reach out to her for a conversation/visit.
  • Prayers for Stacy Kunkel after the passing of her mother Mary.
  • Mary Lou Haney is having ongoing challenges during her prolonged hospitalization at Loma Linda Medical Center. Prayers for Mary Lou and her daughter and caregiver Jennie requested and appreciated.
  • We continue to hold in our prayers the victims of violence and oppression around the world. This week marked the anniversary of the Oct. 7 massacre by Hamas, and a full year of the bombardment and blockade of Gaza and the ongoing human rights violations of its residents.

The Game and Conversation Night is Friday, November 1, 2024, 5:00-8:00 p.m. It is a night of fun and friendship for all ages, for game players and non-game players. This is a toy-raising event, so everyone attending is asked to bring a toy, art supply or puzzle to support the Kids/Youth Store at the Christmas Faire. More info will follow.

The Fun and Friendly Christmas Faire is Saturday, November 16, 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. and Sunday, November 17, noon-2:00 p.m. Over 15 vendors (most are church members) will present their arts/crafts and collectables. This year we are adding two ways to support the RUCC Youth Fund: A Good Reads area and a Kids/Youth store. We are asking for donations of:

  • Fiction/nonfiction, hard/soft cover, children/adult books that would interest the public
  • New (and almost new) toys, art supplies and puzzles

There is a box in Covenant Hall marked Christmas Faire. Contact Ginny Cruz for more info.

sign reading end systemic racism

Racial Justice reflection of the week

Racial Justice reflection of the week:

As women, we often hear about the importance of breast cancer screening and early detection. However, for Black women, despite significant improvements in breast cancer care, a disturbing gap persists in outcomes between Black and White women: systemic racism.

Black women face a different experience in the healthcare system. While all women may encounter dismissal when seeking care, for Black women, this dismissal is often compounded by both racism and sexism. This increases their risks for delayed diagnosis and reduces their chances of accessing or being offered crucial screenings like mammograms. The dismissal of their health concerns can lead to serious consequences, particularly in the context of breast cancer where early detection is critical.

hurricane helene

From the Environmental Justice Team

“As the storm from Hurricane Helene swept into North Carolina, David Easterling went into his backyard, just outside of Asheville, to check the rain gauge. ‘To walk out and see it almost full was incredible,’ he says. ‘It just rained and rained and rained. It was mind-boggling to see that much rain.’ …

[Easterling has] spent more than 30 years studying extreme rain as a climate scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). … [He] says he and colleagues have started crunching the numbers and are finding that North Carolina likely exceeded a 1-in-1,000 year rainfall event. That’s a storm that has a 0.1 percent chance of happening every year. … ‘A lot of people don’t want to hear global warming and climate change and all that, but this is just a classic sort of event that we, sadly, probably expect to see more of in the future,’ Easterling says.”
