ART, FOR HEAVEN’S SAKE! OCTOBER 18, 19, AND 20, 2024
The time for our 45th annual Art, for Heaven’s Sake! Fine Arts Festival is quickly approaching. In four short weeks RUCC will be hosting 76 fine artists and crafters, many outstanding musicians, and enthusiastic guests.
Art, for Heaven’s Sake! is RUCC’s gift to the community and our largest church event. This art show brings large numbers of people to our church facility to enjoy the fabulous range of art by artists from throughout the Inland Empire and beyond.
HELP NEEDED! To make this event a success, it takes a large amount of work and many willing hands. During the next weeks, the Art Show Committee will be recruiting RUCC members and friends to help with the show.
Help is needed for the following:
- Set up the week before the show.
- Help with monitoring the entrance and exit, walking the show, and checking the food area all weekend.
- Providing brief breaks for artists during the show.
- Checking bathrooms for needed supplies all weekend.
- Baking cookies or making appetizers for Friday evening.
- Serving plated trays or punch Friday evening.
- Take-down when the show is over at 5 p.m. on Sunday.
Please think about how you can assist with these jobs. Pam Dunn will have job sign-up sheets in the Narthex before and after church beginning this Sunday, September 22. Or you can contact Pam Dunn at pamdunn23@gmail.com.
Be sure to mark your calendar for this event. You don’t want to miss it!

A message from our pastor and teacher
Sunday, September 22, 2024 ~~ 18th Sunday after Pentecost ~ "Peace with the Earth"
Often when we think about "Peace on Earth" we think about relationships between nations and humans. But there must also be peace with the Earth. There is a relationship between exploitation and violence against the environment -- pollution, waste, overuse -- and exploitation and violence against people. It is also the weak and the vulnerable who are the ones who suffer most from pollution and the greed of the more powerful. As peacemakers, we seek peace not only with God's people, but all of God's Creation -- the living things and the natural world that makes life possible.

Concerns
- Dee Dee Seek’s recovery is going quickly and well. Prayers of gratitude and ongoing healing
- Kimberly Anderson had major surgery on Tuesday, Sept. 10. She continues to have significant health challenges and is in a specialized rehabilitation center. Prayers for Kimberly’s healing and her family: her husband Danny and children Charles and Julia.
- Mary Lou Haney continues to have complications and remains in the hospital. Prayers for Mary Lou and her daughter and caregiver Jenny appreciated.
- Prayers for all those affected by the Line Fire, the Bridge Fire, and the Airport Fire here in our region of Southern California. We say a special prayer for those who have been evacuated, and a prayer of thanksgiving for those who have offered and given help to each other in this congregation.
- We continue to hold in our prayers the victims of violence and oppression around the world. We say a special prayer this week for the people of Lebanon dealing with political instability, hostilities with Israel and its destabilizing relationship with Iran. Recent attacks upon Hezbollah are having collateral affects for the entire population.

Racial Justice reflection of the week
D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, a Native American actor and 2024 Emmy nominee, made a bold statement at Sunday's show without uttering a word.
The "Reservation Dogs" actor walked the red carpet in a striking black tuxedo offset by a bold red handprint across his face. The handprint splayed across his mouth is a symbol of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) movement.
The red hand over the mouth stands for "all the missing sisters whose voices are not heard," reads the website for the organization Native Hope. "It stands for the silence of the media and law enforcement in the midst of this crisis. It stands for the oppression and subjugation of Native women who are now rising up to say #NoMoreStolenSisters."

This is an opportunity to sing, learn what hymns are loved by others, and maybe even learn a new hymn or two.

Book Group will meet Sunday, October 6
The next RUCC Book Group selection is The Splendid and the Vile by Eric Larson. The group’s presenter will be Judith Ashton. The group will meet on Sunday, Oct. 6, 2024, at noon, in the Founders Room.
"In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows, in cinematic detail, how Churchill taught the British people 'the art of being fearless.' It is a story of political brinkmanship, but it’s also an intimate domestic drama, set against the backdrop of Churchill’s prime-ministerial country home, Chequers; his wartime retreat, Ditchley, where he and his entourage go when the moon is brightest and the bombing threat is highest; and of course 10 Downing Street in London…
“The Splendid and the Vile takes readers out of today’s political dysfunction and back to a time of true leadership, when, in the face of unrelenting horror, Churchill’s eloquence, courage, and perseverance bound a country, and a family, together.”(Amazon Review)
Upcoming Book Group selections:
Nov. 3, 2024 Selection: The Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler
Presenter: Diana Sommer / tie in with Heather King’s grant study
Dec. 1, 2024 Selection: An Indigenous Peoples’ History of the US by Roxanne Dunbar- Ortiz Presenter: Nan Root

Help us do a blessing in many tongues!
Do you know a language other than English? On October 6, World Communion Sunday, we will do a special benediction at the close of worship. It will be the ancient Aaronic Blessing found in Numbers 6:24-26 (“The Lord bless you and keep you…”), but we will say it in as many different languages as we can! We welcome all languages, and have a special request for Hebrew, Arabic and Indigenous languages. You don’t have to be fluent, just able to read the language aloud. Hundreds of translations of the Bible can be found at www.biblegateway.com.
