Hurley Elementary Receives 2020 Seal of Excellence Award for Biliteracy
Hurley Elementary Principal Dr. Yesenia Alvarez accepts the honor of being named a "2020 Seal of Excellence Award" presented by the California Association of Biligual Education (CABE) at Friday's RUSD Board of Education Meeting.
Congratulations to Hurley Elementary, one of only three schools in the state to receive the 2020 Seal of Excellence Award by the California Association of Bilingual Education (CABE).  This award honors exemplary bilingual education programs throughout the state and schools in particular that have established effective programs for their English Learners.
“It is truly an honor that one of our schools has received this coveted award,” said Silvia Rivas, Director of Special Projects for the Rowland Unified School District. “We are proud of the Hurley students, parents, staff that work hard every day so that our students can become the future bilingual scientists, engineers, doctors and teachers of tomorrow. Felicitaciones Hurley Hawks, estamos orgullosos de sus logros.”
The Seal of Excellence is one of the highest awards CABE has to recognize schools for their vision of bi-literacy, their commitment towards educational excellence for all students, and their focus on providing students with the skills they will need to be successful in the 21st Century. Hurley Elementary is being recognized for its outstanding commitment to biliteracy with its Spanish Dual Language Immersion program that begins in Transitional Kindergarten through 6th grade and its outstanding overall academic growth of its English Learners regardless of their program choice.
“Our staff is remarkably dedicated to closing the achievement gap for our English Learners and we believe it is our moral imperative to provide our students with an exceptional 21st century elementary education,” said Hurley Elementary Principal, Dr. Yesenia Alvarez. “This award reflects the hard work and commitment of our teachers, staff, students and parents."
Hurley Elementary is located at 535 S. Dora Guzman Ave. in La Puente. www.hurleyelemschool.org (626)965-2429

Superintendent Presents Oath of Office to Board Members Malkin and Venegas
New Board of Education Member Erik Venegas (above) and returning Board Member who ran unopposed, David M. Malkin (below).
Rowland Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Julie Mitchell presented the Oath of Office to newly elected Board Member Erik Venegas and re-elected, unopposed Board Member David M. Malkin on Friday, December 11, 2020 before the Board of Education Meeting. Both will serve the Rowland Unified School District community through December of 2024.

This election the Rowland Unified School District transitioned to the By-Trustee Area process. Each Board member must reside within a designated trustee-area boundary and is elected by the voters in that trustee area. Erik Venegas is a representative from Trustee Area 2 and David Malkin is a representative from Trustee Area 4.

Venegas is a proud RUSD parent and is a supporter of academics, arts and athletics. He was an involved parent volunteer at Nogales High School for numerous activities, including dance, tennis, the Senior Seminar Career Pathways Program and on the WASC Accreditation Committee. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Mechanical Engineering from Cal Poly Pomona and Master’s in Business Administration. He currently works as an engineer in the Aerospace Industry supporting production for Commercial, Military, and Defense industries.
“I am humbled and very honored to be elected as a board member. I would like to thank my family for their support. Especially my daughter, who encouraged me to run. She became my number one supporter, campaign manager, and social media guru. My goal here is to support the community. I look forward to further participating in and sharing with the community the amazing educational opportunities we provide to students,” said Venegas.
