National Gates Scholarship Awarded to
Nogales High School Senior Osvaldo Cervantes
Nogales High School is proud to announce that Senior Osvaldo Cervantes has been selected for the prestigious Gates Scholarship award. Cervantes was chosen as one of 300 of this year’s Gates Scholars, the nation’s largest minority scholarship program that awards good-through-graduation scholarships to pursue degrees in any undergraduate major at the college or university of the recipients’ choice. Cervantes has been accepted to many colleges including Stanford and Yale, and has chosen to attend Harvard University to study biomedical engineering.
“I am thrilled to receive this scholarship. Knowing that I will be going to a small college, the relationships I have built here at Nogales High School have really aided me in the ability to create powerful relationships with my professors in the future,” said Cervantes.
In addition to financial assistance, Gates Scholars receive academic support, mentoring and leadership training. The Gates Scholarship will provide further support to Scholars by engaging with them and their institutions in a variety of ways, to ensure they have access to the resources and services they need, from their first to last day of classes, through graduation and the transition to their chosen careers.
Cervantes is a National Merit Finalist, a Questbridge Scholarship winner, and attended PAYS, the Pomona College Academy for Youth Success, a three year summer program exposing students to a rigorous college environment including lectures and building relationships with professors, paving the way to college success. It is anticipated that he will graduate from Nogales High School with a full International Baccalaureate Diploma. Cervantes is also a top track and field athlete.
Shelyn Students Make it to Finals in Chinese Idioms Contest
Shelyn students Terry Kuang and Bill Li placed #7 and #9 and were awarded with a medal for their first time participating in the "2019 Chinese Idioms Contest."
By Shelyn Mandarin Resources Teacher, Kevin Chou

On April 7, two students represented Shelyn Elementary by participating for the first time in the “2019 Chinese Idiom Contest." The event was hosted by the Southern California Council of Chinese Schools, a non-profit educational organization that connects heritage Chinese schools across Southern California.
Of all 9 participating schools, Shelyn Elementary was one of only two mainstream elementary schools that competed against primarily heritage Chinese schools. Of the 41 participants, Shelyn students Dong Feng Li (Bill) and Jia Hui Kuang (Terry) both scored either perfect or a nearly perfect score in the initial round of the Novice level. As first year participants, they were the only two students from a mainstream elementary school that made it to the final round.
"I am so proud of how our students performed in this difficult time challenged event," said Shelyn Teacher and team leader Kevin Chou. The final round consisted of two types of questions: display answer card and jeopardy. “Many of the questions were so hard that I doubt many Chinese adults would know how to answer them! The participants must have a comprehensive Chinese historical, cultural, and linguistics knowledge in order to answer the questions correctly,” said Chou.

Shelyn Elementary is the first school in the Rowland Unified School District to host a Mandarin Dual Language Immersion Program that begins in Kindergarten. Kindergarten classes have a 22:1 student teacher ratio and class time is spent learning 50% of the day in Chinese, and 50% of the day in English. Shelyn Principal Sarah Opatkiewicz is also proud that the program impacts the entire school, with Shelyn students from all grade levels participating in weekly Chinese language and culture lessons.
