RUSD College Fair Thursday, Sept. 20
The Rowland Unified School District College Fair is from 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow night in the Nogales High School Gym. All grades are welcome - it's never too early to learn about college options! There will be representatives from many private colleges and universities near and far, including UC and CSU campuses.

Helpful workshops will be offered in English and Spanish from 6:45 - 7:15 p.m.

Did you know that RUSD has amazing college partnerships that guarantee admission and scholarship assistance for RUSD graduates? RUSD students who meet admissions requirements receive guaranteed admittance and up to $10,000 in annual scholarships to the University of La Verne and Azusa Pacific University . RUSD has also partnered with Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona to offer guaranteed admission and a scholarship of up to $4,000 annually for our students.
Student Awards & Recognitions
RUSD Board of Education honors Rowland High School FCCLA students on September 13.
This summer Rowland High School Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) students participated in the national FCCLA conference, joining more than 7,500 students from across the country who gathered at the Georgia World Congress Center June 28 - July 2. Students participated in one of 30 Family and Consumer Sciences related competitive events, including STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) Events and the FCCLA/LifeSmarts Knowledge Bowl. These events support foundational, leadership, and workplace skills in areas such as advocacy, culinary arts, and entrepreneurship.

This year 46 California participants earned 11 gold medals, 31 silver medals, and 4 bronze medals. The Rowland Unified School District Board of Education honored Rowland High School's Parliamentary Procedure student team (how to run a business meeting) for their silver medal achievement. The school's Environmental Ambassador Team also brought home a silver medal. These students addressed environmental issues that adversely impact human health and well-being.

Nogales High School Senior Desiree Cervantes is a 2018 National Recipient of the Alexander Hamilton Scholars Award. Board Member Angelena Pride shakes her hand at the RUSD Board of Education Meeting on Sept. 13.
The Alexander Hamilton Scholars Award is a competitive award presented to 35 students nationally who have demonstrated academic excellence and a superior commitment to community service. Scholars complete a five year program designed to empower students to become successful in college and career.

Desiree Cervantes from Nogales High School is a 2018 Alexander Hamilton Scholars recipient. She is a current International Baccalaureate student and a top 10 NHS student who is actively involved with campus clubs. Desiree is very passionate about social justice in the United States. She strives for academic success in the hopes of motivating other people of color to break the cycle of oppression.

As a Hamilton Scholar, Desiree participated in a leadership weekend that took place in New York this past summer.  For the next five years, she will receive mentorship, practical guidance and a comprehensive network of support from leaders and other Hamilton Scholars across the nation.

The parade begins at 9 a.m. at the corner of Nogales and Colima and ends at the Rowland Heights County Park, where the festival takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The parade will feature RUSD school groups, community organizations, classic cars, equestrian groups, floats and entertainment. The 2018 Grand Marshal is Congressman Ed Royce.

Rowland Heights Day at the LA County Fair was Friday, September 14 and this year the parade featured several of our schools as part of the community celebration: Alvarado Intermediate, Blandford Elementary, Jellick Elementary, Killian Elementary, the Nogales High School Nobles Regiment Band and Rowland High School.
