E103 INTRODUCTORY ENERGYPLUS

ENERGY MODELLING AND RESULTS INTERPRETATION FOR OBC PART 3 BUILDINGS

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 9:00 am - 5:00 PM

ONSITE @ 5 SHIELDS COURT, MARKHAM

REGISTER TODAY

Course Summary:

This course provides an overview of the essentials of Part 3 energy modeling using Energy Plus software. The course will present a streamlined process towards creating a working energy model in EnergyPlus from creating the building envelope to inputting plug and lighting loads and creating HVAC systems, all using free to use software. The second half of the seminar will focus on results interpretation and will be geared towards reviewing EnergyPlus model submissions, focusing on key outputs to verify. Attendees will have the opportunity to follow along for a hands-on building simulation experience during the seminar, however it is not required.

Course Description:

Energy modelling is a process of developing and analyzing the energy performance of a building, typically over the course of a year and in hourly increments.

EnergyPlus is an advanced and powerful energy modelling software which can effectively address the energy modelling performance pathways of the Ontario Building Code Supplementary Standard SB-10, the Toronto Green Standard and other municipal green standards, voluntary green building ratings systems and various incentive programs. The EnergyPlus software can simulate a wide range of advance building envelope, lighting and mechanical systems, and is updated every 6 months.

Energy models are developed by and relevant to energy consultants, architects, HVAC designers, and municipal reviewers. This course is designed for professionals from these disciplines.

The course provides an overview of the essential steps in developing an EnergyPlus energy model, using free to use software. Attendees will be presented with a sample building and shown how to create the building envelope, input loads and create HVAC systems, with modelling tips along the way. Attendees will have the opportunity to follow along with a hand-on experience, however it is not necessary. The course will be ‘bring your own device’, and software requirements will be communicated ahead of time.

The second half of the seminar will focus on interpreting results, specifically focusing on key outputs to verify as part of an internal QC process, as well as key things to look for as a municipal reviewer tasked with verifying the accuracy of energy model submissions. This will focus on key outputs as they relate to Ontario Building Code SB10 and Toronto Green Standard energy modelling reporting requirements

This course will be taught by Adam Barker, an experienced energy modeller and team manager with EQ Building Performance Inc. who specialize in the energy modelling for Part 3 buildings.

COURSE INSTRUCTOR: ADAM BARKER

Adam is a Certified Energy Manager (CEM), Certified Engineering technologist (CET) and has a Masters of Building Science (MBSc). Adam has worked in the construction industry for over 12 years, focusing on energy modelling and energy efficiency of the built environment. He spends his time creating and overseeing energy models and related analyses. As an energy modeller with EQ Building Performance, Adam applies his expertise in realizing energy savings and finding innovative ways to pursue ambitious sustainability targets in the Part 3 high-rise residential, commercial, institutional and industrial sectors. He provides energy modelling for compliance with Building Code, LEED and Toronto Green Standard, and acts as a 3rd party reviewer, verifying energy targets for LEED projects and incentive programs. Adam has extensive experience with EnergyPlus, eQuest, Retscreen and EE4 energy modelling software, and in depth knowledge of energy and related codes such as the NECB, SB-10, ASHRAE 90.1, and ASHRAE 62.1.

E111 THE HYDROGEN ECONOMY:

PRODUCTION AND APPLICATIONS

COURSE SUMMARY

An introduction to the Emerging Role of Hydrogen as a Key Mechanism for the Transformation of the Energy Economy to Net Zero Carbon Emissions

This course will provide participants with an overview of clean hydrogen as a rapidly emerging carbon-free transportation fuel and industrial feedstock. Subject areas will include the whole range of hydrogen production technologies including electrolysis of water, steam methane reforming and also pyrolysis of biomass or other waste streams. It will also include all of the various end uses of hydrogen such as fuel for heavy transportation, as an industrial feedstock but also for blending with natural gas to reduce emissions from space heating. The course will explain why hydrogen technologies will become essential to transitioning the energy marketplace away from fossil fuels and eventually reducing carbon emissions to net zero.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

• Basics of the science of hydrogen and how it is produced, transported and used including units of energy measurement and comparisons with other energy forms. Why hydrogen can become a sustainable non-carbon source of energy for multiple applications.

• Explanation of why hydrogen is an electrochemical source of electricity and therefor works in harmony with battery electric technologies to electrify transportation. How wind and solar resources can make hydrogen directly.

• Deeper dive into end-use applications and how hydrogen can compete economically as fuel for busses, trucks, trains, airplanes and ships.

• How decarbonizing heavy industries such as steel making and fertilizer manufacture can progress using hydrogen instead of coal or methane.

• Overview of government policies, mandates and regulations that will incentivize the production and use of hydrogen across Canada and how that will lead to the development of ‘Hydrogen Hubs’ across the country.

• Global snapshot of what is happening in other jurisdictions around advancing the hydrogen economy and how that has local impacts

COURSE INSTRUCTOR ROBERT STASKO, P.ENG.

Robert Stasko is an environmentally focused professional with a large body of experience in the electricity sector. He is also an energy technology specialist who has worked in a various positions involving R&D, product development, market assessment and project implementation. In particular he has worked with the Ontario government to assist in the development and delivery of major energy policy and program initiatives. He has been involved in the development of energy technologies that span the full gamut from nuclear fusion pilot plants to advanced solar films to energy storage facilities and most recently to hydrogen applications. Robert is presently the Executive Director of the Hydrogen Business Council (HBC) and is active in developing ‘hydrogen hubs’ in Ontario that would include producers and end users of clean and green hydrogen.

CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Beginning on January 1, 2023, Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) requires that all Ontario Professional Engineer Licence Holders undertake and report on their individual Continuing Professional Development (CPD) plan and activities. Ontario Professional Engineers are free to select and undertake any Resilient World Institute course that they believe supports their professional engineering practice by maintaining and enhancing their Professional Engineering competence. CPD activities must be directly related to the Professional Engineer’s area(s) of professional practice. This training must also incorporate technical or regulatory knowledge about acts of Professional Engineering. CPD activities can involve in-person courses, webinar courses, hybrid courses, self-study and exam writing. Our various courses incorporate many of these teaching formats. We welcome enquiries from prospective student who want to explore how the Resilient World Institute can help them to achieve their professional CPD training goals.
