RWJBH & Rutgers Health:
What It Means For You

On Tuesday, July 25th, RWJBarnabas Health President and CEO Barry Ostrowsky sat down with members of the RWJUH Medical Executive Committee to discuss the partnership between RWJBH and Rutgers Health that was announced yesterday (7/27).

  • This partnership is designed to create the "Academic Health Care System" of the future, distinguishable from everything else. RWJBarnabas Health & Rutgers Health will be leaders and innovators in this. "It's not fun just trying to keep up," Mr. Ostrowsky said.

  • Rather than contribute, RWJBarnabas Health will INVEST in research.

  • This is a strategic partnership involving all of the professional schools at Rutgers (i.e., Dental, Nursing and Pharmacy schools), and also includes the New Jersey Medical School. Meetings for this complex transaction actually began before the RWJ-Barnabas merger.

  • The goal is to support Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital as a nationally-recognized destination, an academic medical center of the future, highlighted by a seamless partnership between education, research and delivery of care.

  • This partnership will ensure that the Medical School has the venue, research, recruitment/retention and delivery program investments it needs to be a leader, while the Hospital has the resources to deliver the quality of care to achieve recognition as a destination for academic medicine.

  • RWJUH-New Brunswick will become a hub for specialty referrals, especially from the Monmouth & Ocean County areas.

  • Mr. Ostrowsky stressed that this is more than an affiliation, it is a PARTNERSHIP. Both sides will have commitments and obligations to each other.

  • Will result in the development of a 2500+ physician group.

This partnership between Rutgers Health and RWJBarnabas Health will only aid RWJUH in becoming a place built to empower the local delivery of health care, that empowers all of its physicians, regardless who employs them, to make meaningful contributions in the community, allowing the community to flourish and making the medical center a local community asset.
