*Doing together what we cannot do alone

Weekly Message

Dear Friend,

When I last shared about Eleanor and James, they were living in their car through Friends In Deed’s Safe Parking Program. With help from Christina, one of our FID Housing Navigators, they were working to clear an unlawful eviction from their record so they could one day be housed again.

However, life threw them another challenge when their car broke down, making it difficult to stay in Safe Parking. Even though they left the program and began parking in a friend’s driveway, Christina never stopped checking in with the couple; her ultimate goal was to get Eleanor and James into housing.

Then came a new opportunity. A bridge housing community reached out. The couple had turned this option down once before, but with Christina walking alongside them this time, they were open to trying.

During their intake appointment, something special happened. They ran into another client whose dog, also black and white and also named Daisy, instantly brought comfort and connection. Soon after, someone who already knew Eleanor and James walked through the door. Suddenly, the building didn’t feel so intimidating. It felt like a community.

And the best news of all: Eleanor and James have now been matched to permanent housing!

In our staff meeting yesterday, we broke out into small groups to focus on how we are living the vision and values of FID in our work. I was so moved as I floated between the different groups to hear how staff members spoke meaningfully and personally about not only how our values are a guiding force in how we run our programs, but how we treat each other as well. This care and compassion is one of the main reasons I love working with all of the amazing people here at FID.

Of course, we can only do this work and live out the values of our mission with your generosity. Please consider making a gift today, perhaps in honor of a staff member, acknowledging them for giving their heart and soul to this work.

Blessings and have a lovely weekend,

Rabbi Joshua
