The Grand Prix Commission met electronically throughout December and made their new decisions public this week. The changes effect classes in the FIM Grand Prix classes. Specifics are below.

MOTOGP - On Tuesday, December 18th the Grand Prix Commission announced decisions regarding the fuel specification and testing parameters from 2024, and minimum age limit exceptions.

The first decision that was announced regards fuel specification for all classes effective for the 2024 season. The 2024 regulations require the use of fuels with a minimum 40% non-fossil origin, rising to 100% non-fossil origin beginning in 2027.

The detailed fuel specification and testing parameters for 2024 have now been agreed by the FIM, IRTA, Dorna, official testing laboratories, and the MSMA, including input from fuel suppliers.

The second decision effects the minimum age requirements in the the Moto3 Class. Minimum age increases implemented in recent seasons have interrupted the expected trajectory for some young riders who began their careers before age limits were increased, leaving some unable to move up to Grand Prix classes when anticipated.

Existing exceptions will therefore be widened in order to allow the top three overall finishers in both the FIM JuniorGP World Championship and the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup to compete in the FIM Moto3 World Championship from such time as they are mathematically guaranteed a top three position in JuniorGP or the Rookies Cup, even if they do not reach the minimum age of 18. However, an absolute minimum age of 17 applies.

Before the paddock went their separate ways after the final GP of 2023, they previewed their 2024 machines in a one-day test in Valencia. Maverick Viñales was at the top of the time sheets, for what it's worth. There were many riders who were getting acclimated to new teams and new bikes and established rider and team pairings were busy testing new parts.

WORLDSBK - On Monday, December 18th, the FIM and Dorna WSBK Organization released the 2024 provisional entry lists. In WorldSBK, there are 23 riders entered in the upcoming campaign, which features 12 rounds on the calendar. The season kicks off in Australia in February and concludes at Jerez in October.

Significant changes have reshaped the grid, with substantial changes occurring at both factory and Independent outfits. There are new riders, a new team, existing riders who have switched teams and in general, the 2024 grid will look a lot different than the 2023 version.

Sam Lowes joins his brother Alex in WorldSBK. He'll compete with the ELF Marc VDS Racing Team onboard a Ducati Panigale V4R. The team is run by Belgian owner Marc-Oswald van der Straten-Ponthoz, descendant of the founder of the Stella Artois brewery.

The big movers of course are Jonathan Rea, who takes Toprak Razgatlioglu's ride at Pata Yamaha with the Turk switching to the ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Factory BMW Team, where he partners with Dutch rider Michael van der Mark. Scott Redding moves over to the Independent team and out of the factory one, joining American rider Garrett Gerloff at Bonovo Action BMW.

Andrea Iannone (The Maniac) will make his return to World Championship action in 2024, joining the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship with Team GoEleven, aboard a Ducati Panigale V4 R.

After his 2023 WorldSSP Chamionship, Nicolo Bulega rides along reigning WorldSBK Champion Alvaro Bautista at Aruba Ducati. Former teammate Michael Ruben Rinaldi lands at Team Motocorsa Racing.

We get a kick out of the fact the the entry list is termed "provisional" and "permanent" all at once. The entries, teams and bikes are permanently listed below.

MOTOAMERICA - Late last week TopPro Racing announced that it will field a multi-rider team in the 2024 MotoAmerica Championship. Joining the team and moving up to the Superbike class is 2021 MotoAmerica Supersport Champion Sean Dylan Kelly. The team will campaign a pair of BMW M 1000 RRs, the second of which will be ridden by TopPro Racing team owner Alex Arango.

Kelly, who is tied for second on the all-time MotoAmerica Supersport win list with 19 victories, is coming off two seasons of competing in the Moto2 World Championship. Arango, meanwhile, finished in the top 20 in the 2023 Stock 1000 Championship in his first season in the series.

Arango and Kelly Team Up at TopPro

“We have worked tirelessly during the off season to make this team a reality,” Arango said. “We interviewed numerous riders to find the best fit for our team which we believe will see us achieve our best results for the 2024 season. Securing Sean (Dylan Kelly) was a priority as we feel he can be very competitive with the BMW package we will be providing. He’s motivated and ready to stand on the box again in the MotoAmerica series.

“We are eager to get on track with the entire team as we have a lot of work still to do to prepare over the next few months. We are excited to get the riders on track to test with their new mechanics and aboard their new machines. We have set high expectations for our team going into the season, and believe we have a great group of pilots to achieve great results.”

“I’m excited to race in front of all the fans in the United States again,” said Kelly. “I’ve seen so much success in the MotoAmerica paddock, and I look forward to achieving that success again and connecting with friends I haven’t seen over the past two seasons. I can’t thank team owners Alex Arango and Agustin Sierra enough for this opportunity and I’m excited for the first test aboard my BMW M 1000 RR Superbike.”

The 2024 MotoAmerica season begins with the 82nd running of the Daytona 200, a non-points-paying Supersport race that will take place at Daytona International Speedway, March 7th - 9th.

FORMULA 1 - After the historic season that Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing laid down in 2023, will anybody have an answer for the juggernaut? In the month of January, all the elves will be working OT back at the factories to improve their chances and hopefully provide us with more competition in F1 for the coming year.

Ferrari will unveil the Formula 1 car they hope can help them take the fight to world champions Red Bull in 2024 on Tuesday, February 13th.

The Italian team are the first to publicly reveal their 2024 launch date but they have chosen not to release any specific details about their launch plans.

The launch will take place just eight days before the start of pre-season testing, which runs across three days in Bahrain from February 21st - 23rd.

Team Principal Fred Vasseur says Ferrari are changing “95% of the components of the car” which finished third in the constructors’ championship behind Red Bull and Mercedes.

On February 13th a New Ferrari Will Roll Out of Maranello

The 2024 campaign will be Vasseur’s second season at the helm of the Prancing Horse, and the third car built in Maranello to sweeping new regulations introduced in 2022.

Ferrari will, for a fourth straight season, field Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, who was the only non-Red Bull driver to score a victory in 2023 when he triumphed in Singapore.

Both drivers are out of contract at the end of the season, with talks ongoing with both parties regarding an extension into 2025 and beyond.

Formula 1 will next be in action February 21st - 23rd for the pre-season test in Bahrain.

2024 F1 CALENDAR

INDYCAR - Team Penske has become synonymous with success from its first day of competition when the formerly named Roger Penske Racing picked up a win in the team’s inaugural start, the 1966 Rolex 24 at Daytona. In the 57 years since that first win, Team Penske has amassed record-setting numbers in the world of Motorsports with more than 600 wins and 675 pole positions, 44 national championships, 19 Indianapolis 500 wins and three Daytona 500 victories.

Team Penske has secured at least one championship in every year since 2012. Just in the past six years, the team has posted the following stats:

  • 3 Indianapolis 500 wins in the last six years
  • 2 INDYCAR Championships in the last six years
  • 148 Wins in the last six years
  • 12 Championships in the last six years in NASCAR, INDYCAR, IMSA and Australian Supercars
  • 3 NASCAR Championships in the last six years
  • 1 Daytona 500 win in the last six years

Some Leaders Keep an Eye on Details. The Captain Keeps Two

On Saturday evening at the annual Team Penske holiday party, Nick Goozee and Jay Signore were inducted into the Team Penske Hall of Fame, becoming the 14th and 15th team members to receive the distinguished honor. Both men represent some of the most unique and unsung areas of the team’s 57-year history with contributions spanning across Team Penske practices. The two received their custom awards as the team gathered to celebrate their second consecutive NASCAR Cup Series championship and their 19th Indianapolis 500 victory.

A native of South London, Nick Goozee joined Team Penske in 1974 as a fabricator for the team’s Formula 1 operation based at Penske Cars in Poole, Dorset, England. In 1983, Goozee rose to the role of Managing Director of the famed facility on the southern coast of England where F1 and INDYCAR winners were constructed from 1974 to 1999 using standards of build that few other manufacturers could match.

Nick Goozee was instrumental in the design, development and build of Penske chassis that would go on to win 14 Indianapolis 500s and nine INDYCAR SERIES championships. This included the winningest chassis in Penske Cars history, the PC-23 that Al Unser Jr., Emerson Fittipaldi and Paul Tracy used to dominate the 1994 INDYCAR season. That year the team won 12 of 16 races – including a historic performance at the Indianapolis 500 with the Mercedes-Benz engine – en route to a 1-2-3 finish in the series standings with Unser taking the crown.

Jay Signore first came to the attention of Roger Penske after Signore and Team Penske’s first champion driver, Mark Donohue, competed in Sports Car Club of America races together in the late 1950s. His first role was helping with Penske’s powerboat racing operation in the summer of 1972. Signore joined Team Penske in 1973 and helped manage the team until 1980.

The biggest undertaking for Signore during his time at Team Penske was as President of the International Race of Champions (IROC) from 1974 to 2007, an all-star racing series co-created by Roger Penske. Over the span of its existence, IROC featured drivers from NASCAR, INDYCAR, Formula 1, Sports Car and dirt racing competing in identically prepared cars.

The Team Penske Hall of Fame began in 2016 when Team Penske celebrated its 50th anniversary in Motorsports. Inductions into the Team Penske Hall of Fame occur annually. Each year, inductees are chosen from current and former drivers, employees and partners that have made a significant impact on the team and its history. The Hall of Famers are honored both at an event and within the walls of the Team Penske facility located in Mooresville, NC.

With their inductions, Goozee and Signore join previous Team Penske Hall of Fame honorees: Roger Penske (2016), Mark Donohue (2016), Rick Mears (2017), Karl Kainhofer (2017), Rusty Wallace (2018), Walter Czarnecki (2018), Don Miller (2019), Dan Luginbuhl (2019), Helio Castroneves (2020), Tim Cindric (2021), Jerry Breon (2021), Larry Bluth (2022) and Clive Howell (2022).

The 2024 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season opens Sunday, March 10th on the Streets of St. Petersburg, Florida. The season concludes at the Big Machine Music City Grand Prix on the streets of Nashville on September 15th. Check out the 2024 schedule for INDYCAR.

FORMULA E - Formula E is taking a page from Formula 1, which expanded its fan base via their Netflix series; Formula 1: Drive to Survive.

Formula E hopes to achieve the same results with their Unplugged series. Season Three of Unplugged goes live on Tuesday, January 2nd, giving viewers an unfiltered account of Season 9. The latest series will feature the title chase that was only decided on the final weekend.

Britain’s Jake Dennis of Andretti Formula E Team won the Drivers’ world championship title in London on the final weekend of the season, the climax of a season-long tussle with rivals Pascal Wehrlein, of TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team, Jaguar TCS Racing's Mitch Evans and Envision Racing's Nick Cassidy, who would end up finishing second but not before helping his team clinch the Teams’ World Championship title in the final race.

Seven different drivers from six different teams won races during the 16-race season which featured races in Mexico City, Diriyah, Hyderabad, Cape Town, São Paulo, Berlin, Monaco, Jakarta, Portland, Rome and London. Maserati returned to single-seater world championship Motorsport for the first time in more than 60 years in Season 9, joining McLaren, Porsche, Jaguar, Nissan and Mahindra.

While the story of Jake Dennis’s dramatic first world championship is a key storyline, the series also features the technological developments of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.

Dennis Defends His Formula E Title January 13th in Mexico City

Jake Dennis: “It took a momentous effort from the entire team last year to achieve what we did. So much happens behind the scenes that fans don’t usually get to see, and so to be able give fans an insight into all of the untold stories through Unplugged is fantastic. It’s also so much easier to connect with a sport when you feel like you know the people involved in it. Unplugged truly offers viewers a unique look at what it takes to compete in one of the world’s most competitive sports.

Episode 1 is titled; The American Dream, Avalanche Andretti. The name Andretti is synonymous with American Motorsport. With a team in FE, the focus of the story is to explore how their American values fit within a modern Motorsport series. And how that impacts Jake Dennis during the battle for the championship.

Episodes are 25 minutes in length and can be seen in the United States on YouTube and ROKU.

The 2023/24 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship begins in Mexico City on Saturday, January 13th. Season 10 features new races in Shanghai and Tokyo, with returns to Diriyah, Hyderabad, São Paulo, Berlin, Monaco, Portland, London plus Misano in Italy.

Alboreto: Gasoline in the Veins - The story about the man who grew up to realize his childhood dream of driving a Formula 1 car for Enzo Ferrari is now available once more in the United States.

Alboreto: Gasoline in the Veins is written by Michele Alboreto's brother Ermanno and details his early years and rise through the racing ranks.

It also tells about his character outside the car and that is the contribution that we are most proud to be associated with. It began with an interview during Michele's Indy car career and a request to use it in his life story. We also contributed interviews with his teammates and racing legends like Giacomo Agostini.

IMSA WTSC - After a successful debut season for the reimagined GTP class in IMSA racing in 2023, they will be adding entries to the top class, while at the same time, restructuring the GT classes in accordance with FIA GT3 spec cars.

Mustang will return to the IMSA grid in 2024 and in the United States of America fierce loyalty has always been a part of the Ford/Chevrolet rivalry. The Corvette and Mustang competition will certainly stoke the fire of diehard fans that draw their line of interest between a blue oval and a bowtie.

Established teams are also making changes in brands. Most notably, former GT Champion team Pfaff Motorsports, who are moving away from Germany and towards Great Britain. The plaid Porsche had a legion of loyalists, but now the Canadian team will be entering a McLaren 720S GT3 into GTD PRO competition. The driver lineup will also look different in 2024. Oliver Jarvis and Marvin Kirchhoefer will drive for the team in next season. Completing the lineup in the endurance races are James Hinchcliffe and Alexander Rossi.
