Racism in the 21st Century: The Effect of Racism in the Therapeutic Relationship
Wednesday, November 18, 2020
12:00 to 1:30 pm
On Zoom!

White therapists who are unaware of the effect of the culture on their implicit biases can experience an inability to engage clients who are from marginalized populations. Being white includes a passport into the privilege and power within a society controlled by a white majority. White society has difficulty accepting individual and collective responsibility for the marginalization of other people.

The work of facing difficult topics regarding racism often induces defensive attitudes, even in those therapists who feel that they have resolved their unconscious attitudes toward the other. Neither admitting nor recognizing the advantages of being white casts a shadow on those who don’t have an opening into a world of opportunity.

The unconscious biases of white therapists are confronted in discussions of racism. Realizing that they do not have conscious awareness of the societal attitudes that motivate and influence them, therapists may begin to understand and address their biases through the study of psychoanalytic theory. How can psychoanalytic theory help us to understand our own internalized racism?

As therapists and leaders how can we increase our awareness and personal empathy for the marginalized people we serve?
