We have had a wide range of accomplishments and events during the past two months: Holiday parties, LEAN project celebrations, Holiday food drives, RSNA presentations, participation in national leadership programs, Women in Radiology medical student interest groups, books published, research on the cover of prestigious journals, grants, global healthcare quality initiatives, and extensive national media coverage of our INR division’s role in treating a patient for an acute stroke after the patient’s 12 year old grandson took control of their car when his grandfather lost consciousness.

Grant to Bring Tay-Sachs Gene Therapy to Clinical Trial
|
Heather Gray-Edwards, PhD, DVM, Assistant Professor of Radiology, is part of a team for advancement of Phase I/II clinical trial of the genetic disorder Tay-Sachs. UMMS has received a $1.4 million donation from the Blu Genes Foundation, a Toronto-based foundation. The team which also includes Miguel Sena-Esteves, PhD and Dean Terence R. Flotte, MD, will move research from the preclinical phase to early stage human trials.

Dr. Hussain Appointed to CIRE
|
Dr. Sarwat Hussain, Division Chief Global Radiology, has been appointed to serve as a member of the Committee on International Radiology Education (CIRE) by the Board of Directors of the Radiological Society of North America. The appointment is a three-year term beginning at the close of the 2018 RSNA meeting.

12 Year-Old Boy and Dr. Puri Save Stroke Victim
|
A heroic twelve-year-old boy saved his grandfather who had a stroke while driving on the highway. After safely guiding the car to the side road the boy contacted 911. The grandfather was brought to University Campus of UMass Memorial Healthcare, where
Dr. Ajit Puri performed a thrombectomy. Dr. Puri is Chief of the Division of Neurointerventional Radiology at UMMS. The grandfather is recovering very well.

National Radiologist Technology Week
|
National Radiologic Technology Week was celebrated November 4-10, 2018! The week-long celebration calls attention to the important role medical imaging and radiation therapy professionals play in patient care and health care safety. In honor of the week, UMMMC Radiology Leadership hosted events at different sites.

Award from MSK LEAN Project Team
|
The Department received a UMMHC Green Belt for a successful Lean project for the Musculoskeletal (MSK) Division. The hospital initiated LEAN as a means for Less Waste More Time for Quality Care. The Department undertook "Improving Musculoskeletal Radiologist Efficiency." A poster presenting the project was authored by

Department members from 5 locations and campuses joined together to donate Thanksgiving food baskets for 23 families from Girls Inc. This is a record high for the Department of Radiology over the 20 plus years of contributing baskets. This annual thankful giving was organized by

Dr. Carolynn DeBenedectis was invited to participate in a one-year women's leadership program called LEAD -
Leading, Empowering and Disrupting. The LEAD program is jointly led by SCARD (Society of Chairs of Academic Radiology Departments) and GE Healthcare. The program's goal is to increase the number of women in leadership positions with their respective organizations and to build a national community of women across Industry and Radiology.

The Radiology Staff on the Memorial Campus took up two causes to support during the holiday season this year – both the Worcester County Food Bank and a family in need.

RIG Event - Women in Radiology

The Department hosted a Women in Radiology panel for RIG the Radiology Interest Group for medical students. The event took place on November 1 from 5:30-7pm with

Global Institute Healthcare Quality
|
Dr. Sarwat Hussain established GIHQ (
www.gihq.org) in Pakistan and launched a movement of healthcare quality improvement in his native country with a population of 200 million. GIHQ is also incorporated in Massachusetts as a non-profit corporation. Sarwat Hussain, MD is the UMMS Radiology Division Chief of Global Radiology.

The Radiology Department recently celebrated
Ella Covello's retirement with cake and gifts. Ella has retired as Academic Administrator after 27 years at UMMS! Ella's first adventure as a retiree will be a cruise in January! Happy Retirement Ella! We will miss you!

Joelle Wazen Selected of ITAR
|
Joelle Wazen, MD, PGY-3 Resident, was selected for the RSNA/AUR/ARRS Introduction to Academic Radiology (ITAR) Program. Dr. Wazen attended the ITAR program held during the RSNA Annual Meeting. Dr. Wazen spoke highly of the program and said. "It was an amazing experience."

UMMS Participates in National TMIST Study
|
Gopal Vijayaraghavan, MD, Division Chief Breast Imaging, is the principal investigator for TMIST. Our Medical Center is participating alongside 100 mammography clinics across the United States and Canada in a clinical trial called TMIST (Tomosynthesis Mammographic Imaging Screening Trial) to determine if 3D mammography is better than 2D mammography for breast cancer screening. Unlike 2D screening, 3D screening uses tomosynthesis, which takes images from several different angles around the breast to generate the 3D image.

The Radiology Residency Interview season was streamlined this year. There were seven days of interviews with two groups each day. The last day of interviews was January 16. The next step is ranking by programs and candidates then waiting for Match Day in March.

Neuroscience Q&A Book Published

Manas Das, MD, Associate Professor in the Division of Translational Anatomy recently authored his second book,
Medical Neuroscience Q&A. The book was published by Thieme and is a test prep for USMLE.
