Issue 55| Summer/ Early Fall 2024
Dear All,
Welcome to our Summer / “Early Fall” 2024 newsletter. Apologies for the publishing delay. In this issue we share a mix of joy and sadness: The joy associated with graduation, awards, and welcoming new residents; and the sadness of the passing of Dr. Jerry Balakian. The past academic year has been one of continued growth and accomplishments. Despite the record clinical volume in fiscal year 2024 (which ended on 9/30/24) we have continued to advance our educational and research missions and find ways to support each other and our community. At the end of this month, we will welcome 3 external reviewers: Drs. Chertoff, DeStigter and Oates, who will lead the “5-year review” of the department as required by the UMass University system.
As always, please send me any items that you would like to share in RadNews.
Sincerely,
Max

It’s with great sadness I share the news below that Dr. Jerry Balikian passed away last Friday. Jerry was the Division Chief of Chest Radiology at UMass for over 20 years. He was Professor of Radiology. Anyone who worked here more than 10 years ago likely had many fond interactions with Dr. Balikian. He was a mainstay of the Radiology department and retired in 2015. For those of you in the department who did not have the pleasure of knowing and working with Jerry – he was one of the most gracious, dedicated, and optimistic Radiologists I have ever worked with. He is the inspiration for our Jerry Balikian “Extra Mile” award.

On Wednesday, August 28, we celebrated Eloisa Torres’ retirement. She is leaving the Radiology Department after almost 33 Years! The Radiology file room will feel a little empty without her and we will miss definitely miss her!
