Welcome to our Winter ’23 newsletter,
As our department continues to grow, it’s becoming more challenging to stay connected with each. One of the ways to keep the department on a “personal level” is to share unique backgrounds/interests/talents that we each have. In this month’s newsletter we feature Chris Baker’s talent as a cartoonist. (I have known Chris since I was a resident, but only learned of his interest a few months ago). We will also try to feature a project or initiative that is underway in the department and are starting off with a multi-department project to reduce radiology discharge barriers – lead by Kevin Reynolds and Steve Baccei. In addition, we continue to share individual and “team” accomplishments, new grants and publications, and social and community engagements.
If you have something that you would like to share with the department please contact me or Charlene Baron.
Best.

Christopher Baker - Hidden Talent - Cartooning | |
Among the large and diverse group of individuals who collectively make up the Department of Radiology at UMass Memorial, there are hidden extracurricular talents and skill sets; extreme athletes, artists, dancers, designers, inventors, musicians, poets and writers. Recently we became aware of the cartooning talents of Dr. Christopher Baker. Several of Dr. Baker’s cartoons were included in the Arts and Humanities programs in both the American College of Radiology and the Mass Medical Society.

New Transmission Electron Microscope
The Electron Microscopy Core has installed the latest addition to the lab, a ThermoFisher (FEI) Tecnai G2 T20 Transmission Electron Microscope. This instrument was a gift from the HHMI at Janelia Research Campus and is a major upgrade to the older CM120 that it is replacing.
The FEI Tecnai TF20 is a 200kV high-resolution Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), suitable for room-temperature and cryo applications, including imaging of specimens ranging from single molecules to semi-thick frozen cells or plastic-embedded sections for electron tomography to produce 3-dimensional reconstructions of biological structures.
