Celebrating Women Advancing Radiology

Hailey Choi, MD

Duygu Tosun-Turgut, PhD

Ellen Chang, MD

During Women in Medicine Month, we’re proud to honor the clinicians, researchers, and educators who are advancing radiology.

With a passion for radiology sparked when she shadowed a radiologist, Hailey Choi, MD, associate professor in Abdominal Imaging, is leading us into the future with her work as Medical Director for Apex Imaging Informatics. Choi advises women considering a career in medicine, “Do what you love. Get insight into what drives you. Know yourself better to make long lasting, gratifying choices.”

Duygu Tosun-Turgut, PhD, is pioneering advances in Alzheimer’s research. As Chair of the Alzheimer Association’s Alliance for Women in Alzheimer Research, she strives to create opportunities for women to connect in a safe environment to share their experiences. “It provides a stronger voice for everyone,” she says.

Ellen Chang, MD, loves going to work every day to make a difference in the lives of patients young and old, affected by a myriad of pathologies and musculoskeletal conditions. As early as she can remember, she dreamed of being a doctor. To those with similar dreams, she advises, “Try not to compare yourself to others. Everyone has their own path. Try to do your best for yourself.”

Burghardt won for “Bone Strength is Accurately Predicted by Micro-Finite Element Analysis and Photon-Counting Computed Tomography”

Sinha won for “Left Ventricle Metabolism in Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Patients: A Hyperpolarized 1-13C-Pyruvate Study”

Luke Bonham, MD, received the Rahul Desikan Award for his innovative and comprehensive work using radiogenomics to understand neurobiology. Bonham’s research is focused on improving the diagnosis and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, and he is also a T32 fellow and RSNA resident research grant awardee.

Rupsa Bhattacharjee, PhD, received the Bruce Hasegawa Award for her research on musculoskeletal MRI Imaging and osteoarthritis using machine and deep learning techniques. Dr. Bhattacharjee’s work was recognized with an ISMRM Summa cum Laude award and she was also named an ISMRM Junior Fellow.

Research

Miles Conrad, MD, is a co-author and was a site PI for a NIH sponsored prospective clinical trial published in the NEJM this week, Pomalidomide for Epistaxis in Hereditary

Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia. The trial investigated the use of the antiangiogenic drug, pomalidomide, to treat nosebleeds in patients with hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT).

This was successfully administered by the radiology clinical research coordinator team at UCSF including Nick Slater, AJ Tongson, and Danny Thompson, with Maya Aslam as the supervisor CRC. UCSF HHT Center Care Coordinator, Tori Lomax Truong, and Nurse Practitioner, Danny Langston were also instrumental in enrolling and helping oversee the clinical trial.

WIT@UCSF Spotlights Tijiana Popovic

Did you know Tijiana played basketball for 17 years, including 6 years professionally?

Tijiana shares this fun fact in a member spotlight published by Women In Tech @ UCSF, a community of women technologists. Tijiana highlights how technology plays a crucial role in her position at the 3DLAB, specifically for orthopedic surgeons for preoperative planning of surgical interventions and for clinicians to precisely assess and treat injuries more effectively.

Flu Vaccinations due November 1

Vaccination locations include:

Myth

"I just got my COVID vaccine, so I can't get my flu vaccine too."

Fact

Per the CDC, anyone 6 months or older can receive the flu and COVID vaccines together. We recommend getting both.

Team Building

Last week, the department administrative staff gathered at the California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park for the annual All Staff Appreciation Event. After lunch, the teams climbed the rainforest canopy among the butterflies and walked along the depths of the oceanic reefs, rattled through San Francisco's most famous earthquakes, and watched some adorable penguins.

Thanks to Chair Chris Hess, CAO Amy Pradhan, and the entire Culture of Recognition Committee for hosting this great event!
