A Word From Mark

Dear Friends,

At Radiant Futures, we believe every survivor deserves access to safety, justice, and the opportunity to rebuild, regardless of immigration status, identity, or circumstance.

This month, we share Justice for Basma, a story that illustrates the power of legal advocacy for undocumented survivors of domestic violence. With the support of our legal team, she found safety, secured her rights, and began building a future free from violence.

But right now, our ability to offer these life-changing services is under threat.

Recent funding restrictions from the Department of Justice aim to limit support for the very communities who need it most, undocumented immigrants, LGBTQIA+ survivors, and communities of color.

We refuse to comply with policies that erase the identities of our community members. We will not stand by while survivors are told they’re undeserving of protection.

Radiant Futures will continue to walk alongside survivors like Basma and Anahi’s mother, offering compassionate legal advocacy, immigration support, and a path toward healing. Because no one should be forced to choose between silence and safety.

To all survivors: You are not alone. You are not invisible. You deserve to be safe.

In solidarity and hope,

Mark

Justice for Basma: Legal Advocacy for Undocumented Survivors

Driving southbound where the 5 meets the 55 freeway on a Monday night always felt like “the Orange Crush” to Basma, crowded, chaotic, and suffocating. For two years, Basma had dreaded this drive from Diamond Bar to Costa Mesa to pick up her kids from her estranged husband, Darien. Though she cherished time with her children, the visits were shadowed by anxiety and fear. Darien had become increasingly manipulative, often threatening her safety and her immigration status.

As an undocumented survivor, Basma felt powerless. Darien used the legal system as a weapon, threatening deportation and full custody of the kids if she ever challenged him. Without a green card, and no experience navigating the U.S. legal system, Basma felt trapped in a cycle of fear, afraid to speak up or act.

Everything changed when Basma connected with a Radiant Futures legal advocate.

At the urging of a friend, she came to Radiant Futures and met with a legal advocate who helped her understand her rights and the legal protections available to survivors of domestic violence. For the first time, Basma learned that abuse doesn’t have to be physical to be real and that she had the right to safety, no matter her immigration status.

Finding Safety in Uncertain Times

When Anahi’s mother was seriously injured in an act of domestic violence, her world shifted. Anahi, a U.S. citizen, had grown up watching her mother work hard, cleaning homes, providing for the family, and doing it all without legal status. After her abuser was arrested, Anahi’s mom was left not only to heal physically and emotionally but also to navigate threats from a customer who warned her, “I’ll call ICE and have you deported.”

Terrified, Anahi’s mom left the job in tears. Anahi reached out to Radiant Futures, where a Legal Advocate met with them the next day. The advocate listened with care and helped them understand the rights her mother still has, even without legal immigration status.

At Radiant Futures, we understand how fear, misinformation, and uncertainty can overwhelm survivors especially those who are undocumented. Many have been told they don’t have options. The truth is more hopeful: survivors do have rights, and we’re here to walk with them every step of the way.
