Dear Raider Families:

We hope each of you enjoyed a restful, meaningful, and well-deserved Thanksgiving break. As we transition into the final three weeks before winter break, our campus will be buzzing with events, performances, and athletic competitions that fill our days and evenings leading up to finals week. It’s an exciting stretch filled with opportunities for our students to shine, and we appreciate the continued support of our families, staff, and community as we close out the semester strong.

This week, we are proud to recognize our November Rotary Students of the Month, two exceptional scholar-athletes whose accomplishments, leadership, and character embody the values we strive to cultivate at Sonora.

November Rotary Students of the Month

Shelby Yoon – Girls Volleyball

Senior Shelby Yoon has been the driving force of the Sonora volleyball program, serving as our starting setter for four years and elevating the level of play for everyone around her. Shelby’s combination of composure, competitive fire, and contagious positivity has made her a cornerstone of the team’s success. A three-time All-League honoree and standout leader, she balances her athletic excellence with extraordinary academic achievement as part of the International Baccalaureate program, boasting a 4.5 GPA and consistent top-25 class ranking. Shelby’s commitment, leadership, and integrity make her a model Raider, and we are proud to honor her as one of our Rotary Students of the Month.

Duke Tanabe – Boys Water Polo

Senior Duke Tanabe has reshaped the Sonora water polo program through his resilience, discipline, and unwavering leadership. Beginning the sport only as a freshman, he has grown into one of the most complete players in the league, leading the team this season with 117 goals while also pacing the squad in assists and steals. His dedication played a major role in revitalizing the program after the pandemic, culminating in a playoff berth and the program’s first postseason win in seven years. In the classroom, Duke excels as a full IB Diploma candidate with a 4.64 GPA and leadership roles across multiple academic organizations. His drive, character, and ability to inspire others make him an extraordinary representative of Sonora, and we are honored to recognize him as our Rotary Student of the Month.

Have a great week!

Steven A. Cazares

Principal, Sonora High School

Senior Jessica Oh has truly made history this season, overcoming adversity with remarkable determination and elevating Sonora tennis to new heights. Her drive and resilience carried her all the way to CIF, marking the first time in over 30 years that an individual tennis player from Sonora has reached that milestone. Last week, she competed fiercely in the CIF playoffs, winning multiple matches and advancing through the first two rounds before ultimately falling in a hard-fought battle. Her accomplishments reflect not only her athletic skill but also her character, perseverance, and leadership. We are incredibly proud of Jessica; her legacy will inspire Sonora athletes for years to come.

Girls Water Polo:

Our ladies are off to a fantastic 3-1 start and are making a name for themselves in the water. They are led by a core group of ladies, notably Senior Kathy Czarnecka, who was also recently named the athlete of the week. Their schedule continues this week with a couple of big matches, and we could not be more excited for them. Keep it up, ladies!

Boys Basketball:

The boys have come out of the gate fast this season, beginning 4-1 and finishing 3rd in the Rumble on the Hill tournament. In the tournament, their average margin of victory was a whopping 28 points per game, led by Senior Tyler Holmquist and Junior Jayden Barnes. A special shout out to Jayden for reaching a milestone of 1000 points in his career, with many more to come! We are proud of you!

Girls Basketball:

The Lady Raiders have also started very strong on the court, winning their first tournament of the season at the Lady Wildcat Classic at Wilson HS. Samantha Gavaldon was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player and Rajya Elisaldez and Kai Kuwae were also named to the All Tournament team. Keep it rolling, Ladies!

Girls Wrestling:

Our lady wrestling teams have been busy and found success on the mat in recent days. Notably, they placed 2nd place at the Long Beach Poly Dual event, and another 2nd place finish at the Villa Park event a few days ago. Also, Coach Jorge was recognized as the "Best Dressed" at the event in Long Beach. Super proud of our ladies (and coaches) as they continue to show well in competition.
